Welcome to the June edition of Bottom Line.

It’s our 2-year anniversary this month! For those of you who have been with us from the very first issue, thank you for your dedication and loyalty. It’s a privilege to share our funding news, application tips, and funder profiles with you each month. Did you miss out on any previous newsletters? You can find all previous issues of Bottom Line here

For those of you who have only signed up for this newsletter recently, I am Anne Marie Hammer, Director of Membership Services for GFMD. I am also the programme manager for the Mediadev Fundraising Guide and your GFMD contact point for all information about funding and application writing for media development. It’s lovely to have you on board!

In this newsletter you will find:

✅ A new article on how GFMD members diversify their revenue streams

✅ An introduction to the translated Fundraising Guides

✅ The latest funding opportunities from Cameroon, South Africa, the Caribbean, and the MENA region

✅ Profiles for tech funder Meedan and the Pan American Development Foundation

✅ The latest fundraising-related articles and videos

Are you looking for inspiration on how to diversify your revenue?

This month we are pleased to share with you an interview with Jeremy Druker, Executive Director of Prague-based GFMD member Transitions. Druker talked us through how Transitions has managed to diversify its revenue streams through, amongst other things, training courses and study-abroad opportunities.

Last month Bottom Line featured an article on how Ecuadorean digital outlet GK has achieved economic stability without having to rely exclusively on grant funding.

Does your organisation also grapple with revenue diversification? Have you found a successful model? Do you have ideas for alternative revenue sources that you would like to share? Please get in touch!

We will be taking a break over the summer vacation and look forward to seeing you again in August.

Anne Marie Hammer
Director of Membership Services

FROM THE FUNDRAISING GUIDE:
Did you know that the Mediadev Fundraising Guide is available in 5 different languages?
Each translation will eventually reflect the specificities of the region it addresses - but we need your help!

❓ Is the information in the translated version of the Guide accurate and relevant to your country or region?

❓Are there aspects of fundraising that are specific to your country or region that should be included?

❓What are the topics or themes that donors tend to favour in your region?

❓Do you have knowledge of local funders or donors that are not profiled in the Guide?

Sharing this kind of information can:

✅ help raise the profile of your region both to funders and to international media development organisations looking to partner up on new projects

✅ highlight funding gaps and duplication of efforts that GFMD can address through our advocacy work

Write to me to share your experiences and knowledge of your local funding scene. And look out for the Romanian and Arabic translations of the Guide coming out later this year!

Modelling Journalism and the Business Under Pressure

This panel session at the IPI World Congress and Media Innovation Festival 2023 gathered journalists and media professionals from Nigeria, Georgia, Myanmar, and India to address the challenges faced by independent media due to smear campaigns, censorship, financial pressure, and legal harassment from illiberal and authoritarian governments.

The panel, moderated by Dávid Tvrdoň, a subscription growth and retention specialist at Slovakia's Petit Press, focused on exploring innovative funding models and leveraging innovation to help journalists sustain their work in the face of government pressure.

Following the money trail: Innovative revenue models in challenging times

Hosted by Javier Arguedas, the panel session featured insightful discussions with the following notable guests:

Digital News Report 2023

The Digital News Report 2023 from the Reuters Institute is out! Based on a YouGov study of more than 93,000 online news consumers in 46 markets, the report offers new insights into the consumption of digital news. Of particular interest is the rather disheartening finding that online news subscriptions are levelling out:

With household budgets under pressure and a significant part of the public satisfied with the news they can access for free, there are signs that the growth in online news payment may be levelling off... Amongst those cancelling their subscription in the last year, the cost of living or the high price was cited most often as a reason. In the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, about half of non-subscribers say that nothing could persuade them to pay for online news, with lack of interest or perceived value remaining fundamental obstacles.

If you're looking for a quick summary of the report, check out this 2-minute video.
