Welcome back to Bottom Line after what was hopefully a lovely, long break!
We are looking forward to getting back into the swing of things and have a few questions for you to start off the fall.

❓Do you use the GFMD Funding Opportunities to find new grants?
❓Do you refer to the GFMD MediaDev Fundraising Guide when applying for funds?
❓Have your funding applications improved after accessing the Fundraising Guide?
❓Which other topics should we be addressing in the guide and resource centre?
❓Which section of the Bottom Line newsletter is most useful to you?

Fun(d) fact: this newsletter and the fundraising guide and resource centre together garner the most visits and clicks from our members of all our content. And we are understandably quite proud of that fact! But we also know that there is room for improvement.

So please take a few minutes today to answer our survey so we are better equipped to answer your needs and expectations. Or even better, contact me directly on ammhammer@gfmd.info to let me know your thoughts and ideas.

And as promised we have published a summary of the three fundraising town halls held at the end of June.  For a summary of the French webinar on June 23, look here.

Conventional wisdom holds that fundraising costs should be as low as possible to avoid creating an impression that donor money is being wasted. However, the reluctance to spend on fundraising may result in less money being available to spend in the future.

FROM THE GUIDE:

What constitutes good project staffing?

According to the Fundraising Guide media development agencies should maintain an extensive and current pool of consultants or freelance project staff who can be called on at short notice to support project teams.

It is important to ensure that this pool includes:

✅ A diversity of professional skills.

✅ A proper gender balance (a target of 30%-50% is recommended)

✅ If possible, a broad range of linguistic abilities.

✅ Individuals who have a strong track record in target geographies.

But there’s more to the hiring process. Find out more about:

ℹ️ Selection and recruitment

ℹ️ Filtering CVs

ℹ️ Presenting staff plans

ℹ️ The art of the CV

All of this and more can be found in Module 10 of the Fundraising Guide.

FUNDER PROFILES

Google News Initiative

The Google News Lab is a global team at Google whose mission it is to "collaborate with journalists and entrepreneurs to help build the future of media.” Launched in 2015, the News Lab works with news organizations to help drive innovation, address industry challenges, and provide training and access to emerging technologies for reporting and storytelling.

Google News Initiative is centered around three primary goals:

  1. elevating and strengthening quality journalism

  2. enabling new business models to support quality journalism

  3. empowering news organizations to leverage technology for innovation in the newsrooms.

To accomplish this, they’ve engaged with news partners to create new products, partnerships, and programs.

See GFMD’s profile on the Google News Initiative here.

Knight Foundation

Knight Foundation is a national foundation with strong local roots. The Foundation invests in journalism, arts, and in the success of cities where brothers John S. and James L. Knight once published newspapers.

Priorities related to media development and journalism: Knight Foundation supports the First Amendment and the crucial role of journalism in a democracy to inform the community. They believe journalistic organizations must be sustainable in order to be consistently independent.

Geographical priorities: The Knights formed Knight Foundation to promote excellence in journalism and the success of the communities in which they worked, in the words of Jim Knight.

U.S. domestic programs receive the bulk of the foundation’s funding. International funding has receded in recent years, although some foundation support to U.S. organizations has an international component.

See GFMD’s profile on Knight Foundation here.

WHAT TO WATCH AND LISTEN TO THIS MONTH

The Media Innovation Europe consortium, led by the International Press Institute (IPI) and in partnership with Thomson Media (TM), the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) and Media Development Foundation (MDF), is launching calls for four funding and support programmes across Europe to help newsrooms solve these challenges.

You can read more about the call here

Join the info webinar for applicants to the International Press Institute's Transition Accelerator programme and Thomson Media's Deep-Dive Business Consultancies on September 6, 15:00 CEST. You will learn about each project and have the opportunity to ask questions and present your ideas.

How to raise money

Media startup Splice Media has produced a series of podcasts called School of Splice to help start-ups build a viable media business. The two-season audio lessons include the Foundation course, a 5-episode introduction to the basics of building a viable media business, and Full-Stack, an in-depth program with lessons from the students of the School of Splice Class of 2021.

In season 2, lesson 1 on How to Raise Money, we are introduced Annelis Putri, an entrepreneur and consultant who's putting together Indonesia Business Post, a media company that connects businesses around the world with investment opportunities in Indonesia. She talks with her coach Ross Settles about how to go about raising her first money.

If you've ever met Rishad and Alan in person, you know you're in for a smart, information-packed and comprehensive discussion of the topic at hand!
