GFMD MENA Regional Meeting at the ARIJ Forum

Together with the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ), GFMD will be hosting a MENA regional meeting for our members and partners on Nov. 30. With our members in the region, we are currently mapping:

1️⃣ Available funding by country and for the region

2️⃣ Emergency and crisis resources for those affected by the current conflict

3️⃣ Crowdfunding initiatives for journalists and media in crisis

If you are working in the region and have knowledge of existing funding sources that should be added to the list, please do not hesitate to reach out and share them with us.

The results of the mapping exercise will be made publicly available once completed.

Emergency Funding and Crisis Resources for MENA

If you are affected by the current conflict in the MENA region, you can find emergency funding and crisis resources in Arabic and English in the Fundraising Guide.

GFMD’s fundraising workshop and clinics

GFMD, in partnership with ARIJ, will be hosting a workshop and a series of help clinics focused on fundraising for journalism and media during the 16th annual ARIJ Forum. Follow this link for more information and to register.

Please note that this opportunity is only available for those attending the ARIJ Forum.

Not going to the ARIJ Forum but would like us to do something similar for your region?  Let us know where we should be doing these fundraising clinics next!

FROM THE FUNDRAISING GUIDE:
Bid Management

In the realm of bid management, while large agencies often have the luxury of appointing a dedicated bid manager, many organisations cannot afford this.

Nevertheless, there are essential management procedures to follow, even when assigning multiple roles. These include:

🗹 gathering all relevant materials for the bid

🗹  centralising documentation on a collaborative platform

🗹  organising regular check-ins with contributors

🗹 maintaining proper version control

🗹  meeting deadlines

🗹  prioritising crucial bid components

🗹  building a network of reliable contributors for expert advice or additional resources.

These practices contribute to effective bid management and increase the likelihood of success.

You can read more about these bid management procedures in the module on Types of Application in the Fundraising Guide.

FUNDER PROFILES

💸 Knight Foundation

The Knight Foundation, founded by John S. and James L. Knight, originates from a prosperous newspaper enterprise that embraced technology while remaining rooted in local communities.

In 2019, Knight Foundation announced a $300 million commitment over five years to invest in scalable organisations serving communities at the local level. These investments played a role in encouraging developments in local journalism. Recognising the ongoing need for funding, in September 2023, Knight increased its commitment by $150 million over five years as part of the collaborative funding effort, Press Forward. This new funding aligns with Knight’s decades-long focus on informing and engaging communities through robust news ecosystems, adding to the more than $632 million in investments made since 2005.

TIPS AND TOOLS FOR MONITORING, EVALUATION AND LEARNING

Welcome to our new section on monitoring, evaluation, and learning. Each month we look at some of the tools available to media development and media organisations that can help enhance your donor reporting skills and content.
📊 Jotform

In the realm of media development, where the integrity and security of data are paramount, tools that prioritise encryption and robust security features become indispensable. Take, for example, Jotform, a versatile platform recommended within the investigative journalism community for its commitment to safeguarding sensitive information.

Media development organisations, often navigating intricate landscapes of data collection for monitoring and evaluation, can find reassurance in Jotform's emphasis on security. With end-to-end encryption and stringent data protection measures, the platform allows for the collection of valuable insights without compromising the confidentiality of contributors or compromising the integrity of the data.
