FROM THE FUNDRAISING GUIDE:

Decision-making: to apply or not to apply

The example of how GK diversifies its revenue by harnessing its skills and competencies underscores an important point in the Fundraising Guide: stay true to your goals and purposes.

Donors are very good at spotting whether you are a fit for their project.  It's important to ask yourself whether it’s worth your time and effort to chase grant opportunities that are outside of your scope of interest.

There is a tendency to be beguiled by the amount of money on offer and to downplay the risks associated with co-funding or over-expansion.

Advice from members and experts alike is clear:

  • Stick to your competencies. Don’t go chasing projects that you aren’t qualified to implement.

  • Understand your unique selling points, what your profile offers and how it differs from what others do

  • Put your eggs in one or two baskets rather than all over the place

  • Donors want to see organisations that know what they are doing, that have a defined skillset and a clear range of expertise that they can bring to the table

  • Make informed, strategic decisions about the grants that you apply for to ensure that they're worth your time and efforts

Applying to multiple small grants requires a lot of work that may not be cost-effective in the end.

Remember, if you, against all odds, do get the funding, you may end up struggling to live up to donor expectations in terms of monitoring and evaluation, taking time and resources away from your core work.

You can read more about these challenges in Module 4 on Identifying opportunities.

WHAT WE'RE FOLLOWING ABOUT MEDIA FUNDING THIS MONTH

ARTICLES

5 takeaways from RISJ's webinar about crowdfunding for independent journalism in Latin America

“Crowdfunding can serve as an alternative tool for journalists to fund their reporting and tell the stories they want to tell – stories that perhaps have been overlooked by mainstream media organisations,” writes Reuters Institute journalist Gretel Kahn

In this article, Kahn summarises 9 Millones co-founder Alexandra Padilla Dalmau’s talk and discussion during the Reuter’s Institute Global Journalism Series on May 17.

9 Millones is a crowdfunding and publishing initiative in Puerto Rico that utilizes crowdfunding as a means to diversify their revenue stream. Through this approach, Padilla Dalmau raised $55,000 for 31 independent projects. They were able to diversify their revenue stream, allowing them to involve people in the reporting process and to feature a diverse range of voices in their stories.

How to tell if your news organisation suffers from founder's syndrome

Your organization’s growth may be impacted by founder's syndrome, also referred to as "founderitis," without realizing it. The centralized approach may hinder your organisation from adapting to future challenges and opportunities or worse, potentially result in a decline or shutdown.

Fret not– find out about its symptoms and strategies to overcome it in this article by Lenfest Institute’s Head of National Programs Amy L. Kovac-Ashley. She provides valuable insight and guidance for news organizations to address founder's syndrome, promoting long-term sustainability and success.
