FROM THE FUNDRAISING GUIDE:

What is sustainability in funding terms?

The Fundraising Guide addresses sustainability in the section on applications forms

As stated in the lexicon, the term is “much abused and often misinterpreted.”

Fundamentally, a discussion of sustainability should look at

(a) how core activities can be continued after the end of grant funding

or

(b) how they will be assimilated by the project’s beneficiaries

Sustainability in EU applications

So what are donors looking for when they ask for sustainability in funding applications and reports?

We’ve put together a list of examples for European Commission applications in module 9 on common funding templates

Sustainability: sustainability is far more than simply finding other revenue streams to keep the project’s activities going. This section should characterise the project’s legacy on an institutional, sectoral, policy-related and environmental level. Examples include:

🗹 Training of trainers
🗹  Multiplier effects in the workplace
🗹  Investment in training curricula or programme formats
🗹  Investment in technical resources
🗹  Establishing revenue-generating activities
🗹  Introducing new policies
🗹  Creating a community of best practice
🗹  Creating a learning culture
🗹  Establishing networks
🗹  Supporting fund-raising efforts or business plans

You should clearly explain your exit strategy in this section, emphasising how the project's impact can be consolidated and explaining how lessons learned could benefit similar initiatives in the country or region. If you intend to produce an impact study at the end of the project, suggest how it could be disseminated beyond the immediate stakeholder group.

This section of the Guide is for GFMD members only. For access to this section or for information about how to join GFMD contact our Membership and Engagement Manager Fiona Nzingo, fnzingo@gfmd.info

FUNDER PROFILES

US Department of State

The U.S. Department of State leads America’s foreign policy through diplomacy, advocacy, and foreign assistance. For media development agencies, the most relevant State Department programmes are those channelled through the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Affairs (DRL) and the Global Engagement Center (GEC).

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Affairs (DRL) is a bureau within the United States Department of State. DRL's responsibilities include promoting democracy around the world, formulating U.S. human rights policies, and coordinating policy in human rights-related labor issues.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

The United State Agency for International Development is an independent agency of the United States federal government that is primarily responsible for administering civilian foreign aid and development assistance. With a budget of over $27 billion, USAID is one of the largest official aid agencies in the world and accounts for more than half of all U.S. foreign assistance—the highest in the world in absolute dollar terms.

USAID supports programs in more than 30 countries to strengthen journalistic professionalism, establish media management skills, and promote free and independent media.
