Emergency Resources for Palestinian Media

We have started compiling a section with emergency and crisis resources for Palestinian media in the Fundraising Guide to better support journalists and media workers impacted by the ongoing war.

The new section currently includes:

🆘30+ emergency resources for media and journalists, including:

💸3 fundraising campaigns specifically aimed at helping journalists and media caught in Gaza.

We need your help in expanding this list. Do you know of any other resources that should be added? If so, please share them with us by email so we can ensure that all resources are listed and accessible to those in need.

FROM THE FUNDRAISING GUIDE:

I recently asked ChatGPT how the media development community should address the influx of AI in the fundraising process.

Here are a few of the strategies it suggested for taking proactive steps to understand, adapt to, and leverage the technology effectively:

🗹 Education and Awareness: Media development organisations should prioritise educating themselves and their members about AI and its implications for fundraising. This includes understanding how AI can streamline processes, improve efficiency, and potentially transform traditional fundraising methods.

🗹 Training and Capacity Building: Provide training and capacity-building opportunities for media professionals to develop skills in AI utilisation for fundraising. This might involve workshops, webinars, or partnerships with experts in AI technology.

🗹 Ethical Considerations: Ensure that discussions around AI in fundraising include considerations of ethics and integrity. Address concerns related to data privacy, intellectual property, and potential biases in AI algorithms.

🗹 Adaptation of Strategies: Adapt fundraising strategies to incorporate AI technologies where appropriate. This might include using AI for donor segmentation, personalised messaging, predictive analytics, or automated donor stewardship.

It also had valid suggestions for experimentation and innovation, collaboration and knowledge sharing, engagement with donors, and evaluation and iteration.

Not bad for a hunk of junk, right? Just remember that this is the accumulation of all the discussions currently going on online.

You can get some human reflections on how to use AI in fundraising in the section of how-to guides in the Fundraising Guide.

Many small news nonprofits feel overlooked by funders. A new coalition is giving them a voice

There are haves and have-nots in the nonprofit journalism space. And this isn’t right.

Over the course of several months, Nieman Lab's writer Sophie Culpepper diligently researched and compiled a two-part series titled ‘Haves and have-nots’ in nonprofit news? The view from small news outlets. Conducting interviews with numerous individuals from small nonprofit news outlets, associations, and foundations, Sophie garnered candid insights, resulting in comprehensive pieces that shed light on the funding landscape in the United States.

With topics ranging from "bacon-wrapped conferences" to crucial debates, this series offers a rich tapestry of perspectives, making it essential reading for those interested in the intricacies of news funding.
TIPS AND TOOLS FOR MONITORING, EVALUATION, AND LEARNING

Impact builder

The Impact Builder is an online hub of outcomes, indicators and data collection tools designed to help organisations monitor and evaluate their projects and programmes. It has been developed by more than 100 UK NGOs, brought together by Bond, a UK network for organisations working in international development.

The Impact Builder facilitates the development of project proposals, logframes, and evaluation plans, providing three key benefits:

✅ Enhance efficiency and save resources: By utilizing established outcomes, performance indicators, and measurement tools endorsed by leading international development organizations and widely recognized by donors and NGOs, duplication in measurement and reporting is minimised, resulting in time and cost savings.

✅ Utilize proven methodologies: The Impact Builder incorporates indicators and tools recommended by organisations that have successfully employed them, following extensive consultation with over 100 UK NGOs. This ensures the adoption of effective approaches backed by real-world experience.

✅ Foster cross-project learning: By selecting outcome indicators from a curated list, projects aimed at achieving similar results can be compared more effectively, facilitating insights into successful strategies and areas for improvement, thus promoting organisational learning.
