When can I apply?

Applications are open all year round but the next intake of interns is scheduled for early next year.

When does GFMD take on interns?

GFMD internships usually begin in either September or January and last for between 4 and 9 months.

How many hours a week are GFMD internships?

20 hours a week.

Are GFMD internships paid?

GFMD internships begin at 200 Euros a month.

Where are GFMD internships based?

GFMD runs a remote office. You can be based in any location and time zone so long as you have a good internet connection and a working laptop.

How do I apply?

What qualifications, skills, and experience are essential for GFMD internships?

Languages:

  • Excellent command of spoken and written English – at least C1.
  • Multilingual candidates are actively encouraged to apply.

Interest in at least one of the following areas:

  • Independent, pluralistic, and sustainable journalism.
  • Project and programme management.
    International development, media development, and media markets.

Attributes:

  • Strong organisational skills; ability to perform and prioritise multiple tasks concurrently with excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship building, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and independently outside of an office in a decentralised team.

Who are GFMD internships suitable for?

Students or recent graduates from courses related to:

  • Politics, law, social/political science, development studies, public diplomacy, and international relations.
  • Journalism, communications, media studies.
  • NGO management, accounting.

What would give you an advantage?

  • A background in journalism, media, or media policy.
  • Experience of working with non-profit or intergovernmental organisations; regional or international organisations; as well coalitions, networks, and membership organisations.
  • Demonstrable concise and impactful writing skills in articles.
  • Translation skills. Particularly Arabic, French, Russian, or Spanish.

GFMD offers internships in four areas:

  1. Policy and advocacy
  2. Communications
  3. Membership services
  4. Administration and finance

1 – Policy and advocacy internships:

Reporting to the Director of GFMD’s International Media Policy and Advocacy (GFMD IMPACT) or our Policy and Advocacy Manager.

Working with GFMD’s Executive Director and Deputy Director.

Responsibilities: 
  • Assistance in coordination and promotion of GFMD policy, advocacy and learning meetings and other GFMD and GFMD IMPACT project activities.
  • Writing policy and advocacy materials, drafting policy briefings/papers and statements, and creating and managing content for the GFMD and GFMD IMPACT newsletter, website, resource pages, and social media pages.
  • Communicating with GFMD and GFMD IMPACT members and partners.
  • Organising and keeping up-to-date program and project documentation.
  • Collecting and keeping track of relevant project monitoring and evaluation data.
  • Acting as a liaison between GFMD and its advocacy and policy partners, specifically by attending/reporting on calls and meetings, and following the progress of the initiatives.
  • Taking minutes and writing reports from GFMD and GFMD IMPACT working meetings, and webinars.
  • Assisting with grant reporting in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Other related duties as needed, such as administrative tasks like updating our Insightly CRM database.

In addition to the essential skills and experiences listed above the following are essential for this role:

  • Research skills

2 – Communications internships:

Reporting to the Communications Manager.

Working with the Deputy Director and Membership and Engagement Manager.

Responsibilities:
  • Assisting in the organisation of events and meetings
  • Assisting in all aspects of GFMD’s communication and outreach work, including maintaining the website and keeping it regularly updated, compiling newsletters, and engaging with our members and partners on social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube)
  • Writing, editing, and proofreading documents and website content as needed.
  • Assisting in the production of regular communication materials targeting members, partners, and donors.
  • Other related duties as needed, such as administrative tasks like updating our Insightly CRM database.

In addition to the essential skills and experiences listed above the following are essential for this role:

  • Experience in working with content management systems, search engine optimisation (SEO), graphic/design software, and video/audio editing.
  • Excellent social media and design skills.
  • Audience analysis skills for online content creation.

3 – Membership services internships:

Reporting to GFMD’s Director of Membership Services.

Working with GFMD’s Deputy Director and Membership and Engagement Manager.

Responsibilities:
  • Coordination and organisation of GFMD’s capacity-building programme, fundraising guide and resource centre in close collaboration with GFMD’s Director of Membership Services.
  • Populating and maintaining the GFMD capacity building and fundraising resource centre
  • Researching and posting relevant funding opportunities for the media development community
  • Assisting in all aspects of GFMD’s communication and outreach work, including production of content for the GFMD website and newsletters, and engaging with our members and partners on social media.
  • Supporting the Director of Membership Services in the execution of webinars, workshops, and meetings
  • Assisting in the organisation of GFMD events and meetings.
  • Other duties as required

In addition to the essential skills and experiences listed above the following are essential for this role:

  • French native speaker.
  • Arabic language skills are an added plus.

4 – Operations internship:

Reporting to GFMD’s Director of Operations

Working with GFMD´s Director of Operations and Financial and Administrative Manager

Responsible for providing administrative and finance support ensuring day-to-day general operations and procedures as well as financial management functions.

Specific responsibilities:
  • Support key organisational initiatives across operations (reporting, human resources, finance, accounting, admin and team management)
  • Assist with donor reporting processes
  • Take part in HR admin activities and create the necessary administrative documentation
  • Assist with bookkeeping and accounting processes (QuickBooks)
  • Assist with event management
  • Any other general administrative tasks that arise
Qualification and requirements:
  • Pursuing a degree in Business Administration or Finance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programmes, especially Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills to produce reports and interact with internal and external partners
  • Project management skills
  • Be able to work under pressure and meeting deadlines
