WAN-IFRA WOMEN IN NEWS – SENIOR MANAGER, SOUTHEAST ASIA

WAN-IFRA Women in News (WIN) aims to increase women’s leadership and voices in the news. It does so by equipping women journalists and editors with the skills, strategies, and support networks to take on greater leadership positions within their media. In parallel, WIN partners with media organisations to identify industry-led solutions to create environments that embrace equality, and navigate the transition to digital to build toward greater financial and operational stability.

Women in News has been running capacity building programmes and in-house training and coaching for 10 years in Sub-Saharan Africa, and 5 years in the Arab region via support from the Swedish International Cooperation Development Agency. Most recently we launched in Myanmar and Vietnam as part of WAN-IFRA’s strengthening independent programme, which is supported by the Norwegian Ministry of
WAN-IFRA Women in News is seeking a senior project manager to grow the Southeast Asia division of the programme, notably launching programme activities in two markets in the region: Indonesia and The Philippines, leveraging WAN-IFRA’s existing networks that have been established in these countries through multi-year media freedom support programmes.
The Senior Project Manager, Women in News Southeast Asia, is an essential position within the Women in News senior leadership team within the WAN-IFRA Media Freedom division. They are expected to work closely and collaboratively with the Women in News leadership group to implement WIN’s shared vision and strategic objectives. They will work openly and collaboratively with their counterparts in the Arab region,
Africa, as well as other key members of the leadership group. This is a 12-month contract position. Applicants should be ideally be located in one of the markets of Vietnam, The Philippines, Myanmar, or Indonesia.
Specific deliverables of this role include:
- Launch and oversee successful implementation of WIN 2020 activities in Southeast Asia, including the WIN Advisory, Leadership Accelerator and Safety related programmes, holding ultimate responsibility to meet established regional targets;
- Coordinate with country leads to recruit participants for the Accelerator programme and launch the Leadership Accelerator in each of the 4 markets with up to 15 participants in each country;
- Outreach and engage media partners to join the WIN Advisory, which provides bespoke training and coaching and on gender balance, managing sexual harassment, and business and operations notably digital transformation;
- Establish presence in Indonesia and The Philippines, and expand presence in Myanmar and Indonesia by developing local partnerships and raising profile;
- Manage country leads who will be responsible for the local coordination of programme activities, helping them to achieve their programme targets;
- Ensure adequate training in sexual harassment and proper diffusion of the WAN-IFRA sexual harassment policy to all Southeast Asia-based resources/team communicating zero tolerance policy across the board.
- Manage regional communications strategy and calendar including digital content, media alerts, social media etc.. contributing to and supporting the overarching WIN global communications strategy;
- Develop relationships with key stakeholders, influencers and other actors in the media, not for profit/CSO and gender space building the Women in News and WAN-IFRA brands and influence;
- Direct accountability all regional Monitoring and Evaluation and reporting activities ensuring project calendars are up to date, good news stories supplied, contact lists and other important MREL documents are maintained;
- Organise database of materials and documents ensuring all files are up to date including those pertaining to procurement and any contracts or datasheets relating to engagements over the operating year according to organisational requirements alongside those of external auditor;
- Other duties as requested.

- Superior organisational, self-management skills and the ability to motivate when working remotely and/or independently with long-lead deadlines;
- Exceptional time and budget management skills, and ability to lead multiple projects at once
- Ability to collaborate effectively with remote team members;
- 5-10 years Project management experience with large-scale, gender, media development or press freedom advocacy programmes throughout sub-Saharan Africa with established networks within the media and gender/diversity CSO space, as well as academia (universities/technical colleges) in minimum of 1-2 of the above markets referenced;
- Excellent written and spoken English;
- Confident numeracy, written & IT skills, excellent interpersonal skills, analytical reasoning;
- Direct experience in the media industry an asset.
