Samir Kassir Foundation

Region: Middle East and North Africa

The Samir Kassir Foundation (SKF) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation, working to spread democratic culture in Lebanon and the Arab world and encourage new talents of free press.

SKF hosts the SKeyes Center for Media and Cultural Freedom, which has become the largest operation to monitor and denounce violations of freedom of expression in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Palestine. This includes an Online Violations Tracker, and a report on violations of Freedom of Expression in the Levant, published monthly among SKF’s reports.

SKF provides high-level capacity building for journalists to improve their coverage of sensitive issues, with support from local and international trainers, and world-class media development institutions. This includes advanced safety and hostile environment training, offered to reporters around the world. SKF also provides financial and legal support to journalists in distress and advocates for the reform of legislations and practices that curtail freedom of expression. SKF has developed an expertise in media analysis and qualitative research around media consumption patterns and media content.

To help independent media outlets diversify their revenue, SKF co-founded the “Agency for Equality”. This advertising and communications agency, registered in France, connects media outlets with clients that match their values and goals. The agency currently operates in Lebanon, Jordan, and Tunisia, with plans for expansion.

SKF launched Skroll, a news aggregator platform featuring high-quality journalism, articles, and reports from partner outlets. Skroll helps outlets expand their reach, offers cross-content visibility, and includes monetisation features that return revenue directly to content creators. SKF also operates Soora, an online marketplace for photojournalists from Lebanon aimed at expanding their exposure and monetising their portfolio.

Finally, SKF’s aim is to be a democratic voice and a tool for journalists and intellectuals in the Arab world.
