African Women in Media

Region: Sub-Saharan Africa

African Women in Media (AWiM) is an international NGO working to advance gender equality, inclusive governance, and media accountability across Africa. Established in 2016, AWiM has evolved from a digital community into the continent’s foremost network and media ecosystem enabler, advancing gender justice and accountability in media.

Their mission is to create a media landscape where African women are equitably represented, safe, and empowered as leaders, content producers, and decision-makers. AWiM’s work spans policy advocacy, media development, innovation, and research, operating across three levels; micro (individuals and communities), meso (institutions and professional networks), and macro (policy and governance systems) to address systemic gender inequality, exclusion, and governance challenges in media.

A key policy framework within AWiM’s ecosystem is the Kigali Declaration on the Elimination of Gender Violence in and through Media in Africa by 2034. Developed and championed by AWiM and its community, the Declaration has been endorsed by 116 organisations and individuals and aligns with global and continental instruments such as the Maputo Protocol and the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG). It provides a continent-wide framework for transforming media into a safe, equitable, and gender-responsive space for all.

While not the sole focus of AWiM’s strategy, the Kigali Declaration serves as a foundational pillar that strengthens AWiM’s broader agenda of media accountability, ethical governance, and inclusive, gender-equitable work environments.
Together, these commitments underpin AWiM’s 2030 Vision, a five-year strategic roadmap dedicated to advancing gender-responsive media governance, innovation and digital transformation, and women’s economic empowerment and leadership across Africa’s media ecosystem.
