GFMD regional meeting in Sarajevo, May 24

GFMD and UNESCO will be co-hosting a regional meeting for European members in Sarajevo on May 24 in connection with the International Press Institute's World Congress and Media Innovation Festival (IPI WoCo). We're partnering with IPI, the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, and the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network to bring you this event.

Please join us for the opportunity to share information, research, and updates on media development in the region. You can read more about the event and register here.

In preparation for the meeting we will be mapping media development and journalism support funding in the Western Balkans. If you have input for this mapping, please do get in touch

❗ If you're planning to attend the regional meeting or the IPI WoCo, then let's meet up!

Sarajevo was my hometown for 12 wonderful years and I can't wait to get back. It would be great to meet for a coffee and a chat in the course of the world congress or after the regional meeting.

As always, let me know how you use the Fundraising Guides and if there are any suggestions or ideas you'd like to see explored here in the newsletter.

FUNDER PROFILES

Press Start

Press Start is the first global crowdfunding platform for reporters in countries where the press cannot report freely. The crowdfunding platform is aimed at helping reporters and editors in emerging democracies and the developing world to produce stories largely intended for a local audience – journalists who might not have the experience, foreign-language (that is, English) skills, or audience to crowdfund on their own.

For more information see GFMD's profile on Press Start here.

Crowdfunder

UK-based Crowdfunder provides a platform for individuals and organizations to raise funds for various projects, having facilitated over £60 million in funding for start-ups and initiatives. Journalism initiative PressPad utilized Crowdfunder to successfully fund its #DiversifyTheMedia project.

Although there isn't a specific category for journalism projects, the platform includes a publishing category to support related endeavours.

For more information see GFMD's profile on Crowdfunder here.
WHAT WE'RE FOLLOWING ABOUT MEDIA FUNDING THIS MONTH

VIDEOS

The International Journalism Festival in Perugia is an enchanting place to catch up on some of the latest thinking in media sustainability and viability. The videos below are only a few of the panels presented on the topic. You can find more here.

Trained to death: what’s the alternative for enabling great news strategies?

Moderated by Kelly Walls, this panel provided actionable insights for philanthropic and media development organisations, as well as journalists themselves, seeking to navigate the evolving landscape of journalism funding. From re-evaluating media training strategies to leveraging digital platforms for educational content, the session presented thought-provoking discussions on the future of journalism support.

Access a recording of the panel here.
Unlocking private capital to save independent journalism

As news organizations struggle with failing business models and increasing threats from authoritarian regimes, innovative finance approaches offer a glimmer of hope. Can impact investing and ethically-minded businesses pave the way for a sustainable future for media? The Center for International Media Assistance presented this panel at the recent International Journalism Festival in Perugia to shed light on the power of private capital in shaping the future of journalism worldwide.

Access a recording of the panel here.

Building local and national funds for journalism

With traditional sources of support dwindling and international intermediaries controlling much of the aid, voices from communities around the globe are calling for greater autonomy and direct control over funding. Led by experts with firsthand experience in establishing and advocating for local, national, and international journalism funds, this session offered a comprehensive exploration of the evolving funding ecosystem and practical guidance for those seeking to make a difference.

ARTICLES
"Is freelance journalism still viable? Not for most of the reporters we spoke with. These are their key problems"

Freelance journalism faces significant challenges globally, with shrinking rates, job market saturation, and mental health tolls being key concerns. Interviews with freelance journalists from various countries reveal a common struggle to make ends meet, leading many to supplement their income with other jobs. Despite the hardships, many view freelance journalism as a form of community service, providing voices to the voiceless and shedding light on underreported issues.

Reuters Institute journalist Gretel Kahn has explored the problem. Read the article here.
TIPS AND TOOLS FOR MONITORING, EVALUATION, AND LEARNING
Bond's M&E Universe

Bond, a UK-based network for organisations working in international development, has developed a free online resource to support development practitioners involved in monitoring and evaluation (M&E).

It consists of a series of short papers (2-6 pages) on different subjects related to M&E that can be explored through an online platform.

The M&E Universe is designed for practitioners with different levels of experience and expertise, from those new to M&E who want an entry level into the subject to experienced practitioners wanting to broaden their knowledge.

You can read more about the M&E Universe here.
