The Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) is an independent, non-profit and non-governmental organisation that provides support and protection to human rights defenders in the Gulf region and neighbouring countries in order to promote human rights, including but not limited to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly. GCHR is based in Lebanon and documents the environment for HRDs in the Gulf region and neighbouring countries, specifically Bahrain, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The project coordinator will be responsible for managing a project in cooperation with the Innovation for Change (I4C) MENA Hub to promote civil society in the Middle East and North Africa in order to provide protection to civil society activists. We are looking for a passionate advocate for civil society, human rights, innovation and technology and for finding solutions to civic space issues across the MENA region. For this project, focus countries are Morocco, Iraq and Bahrain in additional to MENA regional campaigns. The Regional Project Coordinator will carry out research and manage an online campaign to promote the positive aspects of civil society across the MENA region, in addition to helping organise a large convening to promote women civil society activists in the region, and capacity building workshops, among other project activities. The job requires excellent English and Arabic language skills. In this position, you will report to the GCHR Executive Director or Internal Manager as required, and you will work in close collaboration with other GCHR staff members and I4C MENA Hub project team members, where relevant. The position is based in Beirut, and may be home-based.
- To undertake research and organise surveys on the threats and attacks human rights defenders and civil society are facing in the MENA region, including providing analysis and producing relevant materials to take action to support them;
- To hire and oversee consultants to develop videos and campaign materials based on civil society and related to the project;
- To organise the agenda, speakers, participants and programme for a large-scale event supporting women human rights defenders and four workshops to provide capacity building training about human issues in the region, in coordination with the project team;
- To manage country projects about civil society in Morocco, Iraq and Bahrain in partnership with the local NGOs and the project team;
- To research and develop materials for GCHR’s online protection and assistance resource hub which will also be translated and shared with the project’s Knowledge Souk;
- To participate in weekly project team meetings with other project members from across the region;
- To input into all other programmes and activities related to the project;
- To coordinate with other members of the GCHR team and the regional project team, including staff and interns, and, as appropriate, to contribute to the selection of external consultants and supervise, support, coordinate and provide expert advice on their work;
- To prepare narrative reports for donors about the project;
- To manage the project budget, under the supervision of the Financial Manager, including tracking all financial documents and receipts required;
- To prepare regular updates on the work of the project, and participate in monthly staff meetings;
- To perform all necessary administrative tasks to ensure effective work.
Skills and Experience Required
- At least five years of regional project coordination in the human rights field, with experience organizing events and workshops;
- At least three years of experience managing project budgets is a must, with experience with USAID requirements;
- At least three years of proven experience working with civil society activists in the MENA region, as well as knowledge of the security risks that they are facing;
- Experience participating in or running campaigns related to human rights or civil society;
- A good cross-regional perspective, specialist knowledge and preferably firsthand experience of the Gulf region and neighbouring countries, including an in-depth understanding of the nature of key human rights concerns, as well as political, social, legal, economic, cultural, ethnic, racial and gender issues;
- Ability to exercise good political judgment, thorough analysis and diplomacy;
- Proven experience of writing materials for a variety of audiences, including timely, accurate and objective written information dictated by the need to respond urgently to threats against civil society;
- Ability to understand and express ideas in English and Arabic in a fluent, clear and concise way, orally and in writing; draft text in a variety of styles, e.g. documents such as substantial reports, campaigns materials, and media and action materials;
- Experience working in a team and understanding of the importance of efficient communications for the coordination and effective functioning of teams;
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights, e.g. through previous work, membership of an organisation, involvement in advocacy of human rights, etc.;
- Experience managing conflicting demands, meeting deadlines and adjusting priorities in a high-pressure environment;
- Ability to work from home or remotely without supervision;
- Well-developed editorial and digital literacy, including use of secure communications and a wide array of platforms, such as Google Drive, Slack, blogging platforms, and social media;
- Experience preparing graphics and editing videos for campaigns an asset;
- Willingness to undertake personal administrative tasks if required;
