GFMD welcomes 17 new members

In February 2025, the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) welcomed seventeen new members to our community of journalism support and media development organisations.

We are excited to present our latest additions, who have joined us in our commitment to foster and propel global media development. These vibrant organisations contribute a range of perspectives and skills, enhancing the cooperative ethos that characterises GFMD.

Explore our new members dispersed across various continents, illustrating the global reach of the GFMD network. It is with great pleasure that we extend a warm welcome to the following organisations joining GFMD:

General members

  1. Factjaja – Uganda: Factjaja is the first independent fact-checking organisation in Luganda and Swahili, incorporating AI-powered chatbots to combat misinformation and promote accurate information.
  2. Journalismfund Europe – Belgium: Journalismfund Europe is a Brussels-based independent non-profit that promotes transparency, collaboration, and innovation, ensuring investigative journalism remains fact-based, independent, and impactful.
  3. Frontline Freelance México (FFM) – Mexico: FFM is a collective of freelance journalists in Mexico advocating for better protections and labour rights, especially in high-risk areas.
  4. Al Jazeera Media Institute – Qatar: Al Jazeera Media Institute empowers journalists, communities, and institutions with media tools to promote democracy, freedom of expression, and social awareness.
  5. Association of Independent Local Media “Lokal Pres” (LP) – Serbia: Lokal Pres strengthens local media by enhancing professional standards, advocating for media freedom, and improving media regulations.
  6. Ethiopian Media Council – Ethiopia: The Ethiopian Media Council promotes media development, self-regulation, and capacity building. It advocates for press freedom, conducts research, and supports ethical journalism to strengthen the country’s media landscape.
  7. International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) – United States of America: IFCN connects fact-checkers, journalists, and organisations committed to high journalism standards and nonpartisan, transparent fact-checking.
  8.  Media Development Center (MDC) at Birzeit University – Palestine: MDC is committed to fostering a free, professional, and gender-sensitive Palestinian media landscape that supports democracy and critical thinking.
  9. The Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) – United Kingdom: CIJ is committed to improving investigative journalism standards through hands-on training for journalists, NGOs, and civil society.
  10. Developing Radio Partners (DRP) –  United States of America: DRP works with local media in low- and middle-income countries, providing them with the skills they need to bring reliable information to those who need it most.

Affiliate members

  1. Faktograf – Association for the Informed Public – Croatia: Faktograf is a non-profit media organisation dedicated to promoting good journalism, critical thinking, and an informed public. Additionally, Faktograf engages in watchdog and advocacy efforts on media freedom, disinformation, and democracy.
  2. Turkey Recap / Kolektif Medya Derneği (KMD) – Türkiye: KMD produces balanced, trustworthy news on Turkey for domestic and international audiences, focusing on politics, foreign affairs, and the economy.
  3. CORRECTIV – Recherchen für die Gesellschaft gGmbH – Germany: CORRECTIV is the first non-profit investigative newsroom in Germany that initiates public debate, involves citizens in their investigations and promotes media competence with their educational programs.
  4. 8AM MEDIA – Canada: 8AM MEDIA champions “Better Journalism” for Afghanistan by providing balanced and impartial news coverage. It aims to keep the Afghan public informed with accurate and independent reporting.
  5. Press Club Belarus – Poland: Press Club Belarus is a community of Belarusian media professionals who share the values ​​of freedom of speech and human rights, striving to maintain the standards of the journalistic profession so that in the most difficult conditions, the media can convey important information to the Belarusian audience.
  6. Jummar – Iraq: Jummar is an Iraqi public interest media platform dedicated to providing independent and high-quality journalism. It focuses on producing in-depth reports, investigative stories, and fact-based analysis to inform the public on critical issues affecting Iraq.

GFMD is thrilled to add a new group of members to the network and to work with them to promote media development and support journalism wherever it is threatened across the globe.
