GFMD has joined twelve other civil society organisations to call on Commissioner Breton, Vice-President Jourova, and Commissioner Reynders to ensure online public debate and associated algorithms are moderated and curated in a more transparent and accountable way by social media platforms.
As the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored, how social media companies design their platforms and algorithms dramatically shapes how people are reached by online content, and therefore the nature of democratic discourse. It is vital that the algorithms which dictate the content consumed by people are developed and moderated in as transparent a manner as possible.
