International Journalism Festival in Perugia, Italy, prepares for its highly awaited 18th edition, scheduled to take place from April 17-21. With an impressive lineup of 600 speakers and over 200 sessions, the festival promises to be a hub of constructive discussions, learning and networking. GFMD is delighted to return to this dynamic event, contributing with not only an insightful session and a side event but also invaluable opportunities for connection and collaboration.
When: April 17, 12 pm- 6 pm CET
Where: Hotel Giò, Perugia
Journalism Tech Alliance is led by GFMD and OCCRP, with GIJN, ICIJ, the Pulitzer Centre, the Center for Journalism and Liberty and other journalism organisations, and academic and philanthropic partners. The initiative is dedicated to tackling the pressing challenges encountered by investigative journalism and data newsrooms, which stem from the substantial expenses and constraints associated with cloud computing. Its goal is to work together to find ways of making data storage and processing capacity more accessible and affordable for investigative and data newsrooms.
The meeting will cover the findings from an ongoing survey to assess investigative and data journalism organisations’ data storage and processing requirements. Furthermore, there will be a thorough examination of market analysis concerning computational and cloud services, with a specific focus on data storage and processing solutions, as well as LLMs pertinent to investigative and data journalism. The discussion will revolve around the rationale behind forming an alliance among interested organizations and, pending consensus, establishing the scope and primary objectives for collaborative efforts. Participants will also discuss tech opportunities and future scenarios related to LLMs, strategies and tools that can be developed with access to more data and with increased cloud computing power.
The registration for the meeting has reached its capacity, but we welcome you to reach out if you’re interested in joining us for cocktails afterwards. To those who are unable to attend, we will provide a briefing the following week with the key takeaways from the meeting.
When: April 19, 2-2:50 pm CET
Where: Sala del Dottorato, Perugia
We’ve heard at previous editions of the festival about efforts to decolonise media content, but how do we decolonise media funding and media development? Our Executive Director, Mira Milosevic, will be among the speakers at the session titled “Decolonising media development: a new role for Global North media support?” on April 19.
Moderated by Sameer Padania (Director of the Macroscope Consultancy), the panel also features speakers such as Nishant Lalwani (CEO of International Fund for Public Interest Media) and Christine Mungai (from Baraza Media Lab).
The discussion will centre on decolonizing media development, exploring the role of Global North media support and the challenges faced by domestic and regional organizations in accessing funding. It also aims to explore what the relationship should be between powerful, well-resourced international organisations, & the domestic/regional organisations & networks that have grown in their shadow. While such renegotiations are occurring in other sectors of civil society, the panel will explore why similar changes are not happening in media development and consider what a redesigned media development model might entail in the present day.
