On 21 March 2019, GFMD and its members will host a media development panel as part of the NGO CSW63. The event titled, ‘Does the online space allow women in media to challenge stereotypes and misrepresentation?’ will be held in New York. The discussion panel aims to explore the ways in which women are harnessing online spaces to challenge the stereotyping and misrepresentation that is present in traditional media.

GFMD is co-organising this event alongside member organisations Fondation Hirondelle, Free Press Unlimited (FPU), International Media Support (IMS), Internews, IREX, and the Media Diversity Institute (MDI)The panel consists of women journalists and other media professionals who will discuss the various successes and challenges they have faced in their efforts to develop an online presence. The panellists for the event are:

  • Emma Heywood – Lecturer in Journalism, Politics, and Communication at the University of Sheffield. She is also leading the “FemmePowermentNiger” program, which assesses the impact of radio on women’s empowerment in Niger (Fondation Hirondelle)
  • Laura Zelenko – Senior Executive Editor for Talent, Diversity, Training, and Standards at Bloomberg news, responsible for newsroom diversity and inclusion as well as ensuring fairness and balance across all platforms, in all forms of content (Internews)
  • Ilaria Tosello – IREX Gender equality and social inclusion focal point in El Salvador. Ilaria primarily works on the Securing Access to Free Expression program, and providing safety training and other support to journalists and social communicators (IREX)
  • Snjezana Milivojevic – Professor of Public Opinion and Media Studies at the University of Belgrade, Academic Board Member at the Centre for Gender Studies (Belgrade), and a founding chair of the Centre for Media Research (MDI)
  • Sonia Terrab – Moroccan filmmaker, journalist, and novelist covering themes such as the status of women in Morocco, feminism, and sexuality (IMS)
  • Namees Arnous – Egyptian publisher. Namees founded a new media production company, and has worked on many campaigns that aim to promote women’s independence and empowerment.

The panel discussion will last 90 minutes, including individual reflection from each panellist and a discussion with the audience. The primary goal of this event is to understand how women in media can use online spaces to empower themselves.
