Tarbell AI Reporting Grants

• Eligibility Criteria: Experienced journalists and media creators, including staff writers, editors, and producers. Freelancers are welcome to apply. Journalists with investigative backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply.A background in AI or technology reporting is desirable but not mandatory. Applicants do not need to have an outlet secured before applying, but a letter of interest from an editor will be required before funding is distributed. The chosen publication or platform must be able to accept grant funding for stories.

Objectives:

To support original, impactful journalism on artificial intelligence and its societal implications, focusing on forward-looking stories that help the public understand AI and hold companies and policymakers accountable.

• AI capabilities, safeguards, and evaluations.
• Future of work and society in the age of advanced AI.

• Survey public perceptions of AI capabilities versus technical reality, and the policy/adoption implications.
• Profile the AI evaluation ecosystem and evolving third-party assessment techniques.
• Showcase novel AI abilities (e.g., “sandbagging,” deceptive reasoning) and explore their implications.
• Contrast benchmark test results with real-world deployments to assess practical usefulness.
• Examine uneven AI capabilities across tasks and implications for automation timelines.

Financial Support: Grants ranging from $1,000 to $15,000.
