FREE PRESS UNLIMITED HIRING NEW PROJECT LEADER

Free Press Unlimited (FPU) is searching for a project leader to manage their newest project: “A Safer World for the Truth”. The project aims to investigate cold cases of journalist murders in order to actively promote, encourage and achieve prosecution against perpetrators of deadly violence against journalists and help bring an end to impunity for these crimes.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the formation of a capable international investigation team to implement the project and help achieve meaningful results
  • Responsible for the overall management, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of the project, in close consultation with the partners of the project
  • Ensure the legitimacy and credibility of the project within the international legal framework by building a committee of experts and stakeholders in the field
  • Prepare the narrative and financial project reports and take care of the necessary information/documentation; evaluate the project with external and internal stakeholders; compile an evaluation report and carry out evaluation discussions donors; make suggestions for improving the project design on the basis of (mid-term) evaluation
  • Maintain contact with stakeholders within the scope of the project; reach agreements of strategic importance with the others partners of the project; represent the project in national and international bodies in the area of journalism, justice and investigation
  • Make written and spoken contributions to national and international meetings and discussions in the area of journalism, justice and investigation; create and utilise opportunities for increasing awareness of and support for the project
  • Convince external parties to reach agreement to accept fully fledged proposals and programmes (acquisition)
  • Support the Board of Directors in the preparation of funding applications (incl. ToC and Log-frame development)
  • Signal new developments, opportunities and threats and advise management with regard to the strategy and policy to be followed
  • Display within the established policy framework, operational leadership to internal (project officers) and external staff involved
  • Supervise a focused progress of the work and compliance with guidelines, procedures and standards. Safeguard the quality of the work

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • BA/MA level of working and thinking
  • Strong leadership skills; Ability to make a judgement; Decision-making skills; Networking skills; Strong problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge and experience in the area of investigative journalism, justice and media
  • Clear and effective communicator
  • Ability to think creatively and analytically
  • High level of integrity and accountability
  • Knowledge of project management
  • Excellent time management and multi-tasking skills
  • Willing and able to travel for work-related events
  • Excellent command of English and preferably a second modern language
  • At least five years’ experience in journalism, media and/or capacity building
  • Experience working in an international environment and/or in developing countries
  • Affinity with freedom of the press, freedom of expression and communication is a must

What FPU offer:

A position in a dynamic, international environment based in the centre of Amsterdam. The position is initially for 30 months, with the possibility of an extension depending on performance and availability of funding, 25 paid holiday days a year (on full-time basis) and 8 % holiday allowance.
