UN Global Online Consultation to Develop a Code of Conduct for Information Integrity on Digital Platforms

Status: Closed

Organisation: United Nations

Deadline: 03/01/2024

Location: Online

The United Nations is developing a Code of Conduct for information integrity on digital platforms. It seeks to provide a concerted global response to information threats that is firmly rooted in human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression and opinion and access to information.

The voluntary Code will help guide Member States, digital platforms and other groups in their efforts to make the digital space more inclusive and safer for all. In furtherance of that objective, the United Nations will develop the code, in consultation with stakeholders in the information environment, to present the code in time for the Summit of the Future in September 2024.

To that end, the Department of Global Communications of the United Nations is pleased to invite stakeholders in the information ecosystem worldwide — civil society organizations, think tanks, academic institutions and business groups, including advertising, media, libraries, digital platforms and technology companies — to register for a global online consultation on Tuesday, 23 January 2024 from 9 AM to 11 AM (New York time).

OBJECTIVES OF THE CONSULTATION EVENT

(The online consultation event will be in English only.)

  • To provide a global platform for stakeholders to suggest ideas, share concerns and hopes towards the development of a United Nations code of conduct for information integrity on digital platforms.
  • To deliberate on the nine principles and accompanying recommendations outlined in the United Nations Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda policy brief number eight on information integrity on digital platforms that will inform the development of the code of conduct.
  • To encourage feedback on the existing nine principles, further recommendations for consideration of new principles and suggestions on methodologies for implementing the code of conduct.

This stakeholder consultation will be crucial in shaping the development of a UN code of conduct for information integrity online. To participate in the consultations, please register at https://forms.office.com/e/rRti1sq2iv by no later than 3 January 2024 to receive event details.
