The New York Times is seeking local reporters or freelancers with a compelling investigative story idea rooted in their state or region. Fellows will work for one year under the mentorship and editorial guidance of Dean Baquet (former executive editor) and a team of veteran investigative editors. The fellowship aims to equip reporters with advanced investigative skills, enabling them to produce deep, original investigations that reveal hidden truths and hold powerful entities accountable.
Responsibilities
- Produce a year-long signature investigative story focused on a local or regional issue for publication by The New York Times.
- Receive hands-on editorial guidance and training from senior investigative editors and Dean Baquet.
- Work primarily in your local community, with periodic visits to The Times’ offices for training and support.
- Uphold journalistic independence and integrity.
Qualifications
- 3 to 5 years professional experience as a reporter covering a beat for a local newspaper or digital outlet.
- Either an independent journalist or employed at a newsroom willing to grant a one-year sabbatical.
- Authorized to work in the United States (existing work visa or OPT accepted; no new sponsorships).
- Experience covering a beat with a strong investigative story idea that has lacked the time or resources to pursue fully.
- Ability to bring new perspectives to investigative journalism.
- Strong track record of reporting with local knowledge and understanding.*
