The Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, Europe’s leading NGO coalition fighting dangerous climate change, is pleased to announce an open call for applications to a specialised training program designed for journalists interested in covering climate and energy-related issues in the Western Balkans.

This initiative aims to enhance the capacity of journalists in the region, providing them with the tools, knowledge, and networks needed to effectively report on the critical topics of climate and a just energy transition.

The training program will be taking place in-person and online in Skopje, North Macedonia from 17th to 19th of September 2024. The program seeks to empower journalists to produce high-quality, impactful stories that can inform and engage the public, debunk main misinformation and disinformation narratives, while influencing policy, and fostering a more informed and resilient society.

Program Highlights
  • Expert-Led Workshops: Sessions conducted by leading experts in climate science, energy policy, and journalism.
  • Networking Opportunities: Connect with fellow journalists and experts.
Key Topics Covered

Some of the topics covered in the training program will include:

  • The Western Balkans and climate change: causes, impacts and projections
  • Just transition and just transition in the Western Balkans.
  • Navigating Climate Data and Research: Accessing and interpreting climate data sources, analysing climate research and reports, identifying credible scientific sources and experts.
  • Role of journalism in shaping climate policy and advocacy. Ethical considerations in climate reporting: objectivity, balance, fact accuracy and transparency, journalistic integrity and avoiding conflicts of interest.
  • Framing climate stories: identifying angles and narratives, while addressing climate scepticism and misinformation.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Journalists based in and from the Western Balkan region, working in print, broadcast (TV and radio), and online media;
  • Freelance journalists with a track record of covering environmental, climate, or energy issues;
  • Students from journalism faculties, willing to start a journalistic career on climate and environmental journalism.
