Applications are now open for the Journalist Workshop in Kazakhstan to strengthen journalists’ skillsets in Central Asia to understand and effectively communicate about the links between climate change and biodiversity conservation.

Structure of the workshop

The Journalist workshop will be led by Alevtina Madyarova and Gulim Amirkhanova, two nationally and internationally recognised journalists and trainers with extensive expertise with storytelling, focusing on three critical tracks:

  • Technical skills – including a skills workshop designed to introduce and deepen understanding of data mining/storytelling
  • Editorial skills – including ways to identify and pitch stories, how to secure the elements needed to produce them, and storytelling as a craft, and
  • Practical skills – participants apply their learning to complete a short story during the course of the workshop
  • The workshop includes visiting field sites near the CAMCA pilot site of Ile Balkhash State Natural Resources Reserve and the villages of Karaoy and Zhideli.

This workshop is open for journalists based in Kazakhstan, freelance or working for established Kazakh media from photojournalism, video/documentary, or print/web media who regularly cover environmental issues, especially climate change and its impacts in the Central Asian region.
