The Media Institute of the Caribbean, in partnership with the British High Commission in Jamaica, is accepting applications from Caribbean newsrooms to receive Emergency Media Kits designed to enhance newsroom resilience in the face of natural disasters.
This initiative aims to ensure independent media outlets across the region can continue operations during crises such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods, when reliable information is most vital.
The UK Government is donating eight state-of-the-art Emergency Media Kits, which will be distributed by the Media Institute of the Caribbean (MIC) through a transparent, needs-based process.
Objectives
- Ensure continuity of independent news services during natural disasters
- Strengthen newsroom resilience and crisis response capacity
- Support editorial independence and public-interest journalism under extreme conditions
- Encourage community-informed reporting during emergencies
Eligibility
- Submit a completed application form
- Complete a disaster risk assessment outlining hazard exposure and operational vulnerabilities
- Demonstrate editorial independence, public-interest commitment, and audience reach
- Show financial need and commit to post-deployment reporting and community engagement
