Civitates Funding for Independent Public Interest Media

Civitates is launching its second open call for proposals to support independent public interest media outlets in Europe. This initiative aims to strengthen the sustainability and operational stability of media organizations committed to providing quality journalism, fostering public debate, and enhancing democratic engagement.

Proposals are welcomed from media organizations registered in Hungary, Poland, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Croatia.

Objectives

• Strengthen the sustainability and resilience of independent public interest media.
• Support media organizations in business model development, editorial growth, audience engagement, and outreach.
• Enhance the contribution of independent media to balanced public dialogue and democratic processes.

Eligibility Criteria

• Media organizations must be registered in Hungary, Poland, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Slovakia, or Croatia.
• Applicants must demonstrate the need for core funding and outline how it will help achieve their mid-term goals.

Financial Support

• Funding Amount: Up to €160,000 per organization for two years.
• The grant must not exceed 50% of the applicant’s total spending in 2024.
• Up to 8 media outlets will be selected, with at least one from each eligible country.

Application Guidelines

The application process consists of two phases:

• Phase 1: Submission of a concise concept note and preliminary budget.
• Phase 2: Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a detailed proposal and budget.
