Call for Video Pitches on the Environment

Status: Open

Organisation: Mongabay

Deadline: Ongoing

Location: Remote

Mongabay’s Global team is accepting pitches on video content, with a focus on the following:

  • Features (5-6 minutes): Solutions-oriented, character-led short documentaries. Stories that witness the voices and knowledge of communities directly impacted by environmental change—and how they’re fighting for a better future.
  • Short News (1-3 minutes): News of high environmental interest, produced for social (i.e. vertical video). These should highlight key points of a news or human interest story.
  • Selects: We commission and/or support outstanding stories that have a unique angle, or that provide exclusive access into communities or local organisations.

For a sense of the types of videos that Mongabay publishes, please refer to their YouTube channel. Subscribe to the Mongabay Video newsletter for regular updates on our videos and pitch callouts.

  • Mongabay occasionally accept finished work, but they’re more liable to accept and commission productions in their early stages (i.e. in the pitch and research, or pre-production, stage).
  • The ideal proposal would be a pitch with a production plan in mind.
  • They regularly publish videos in languages besides English, and have accepted proposals in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Bahasa Indonesia, Khmer, and more.
  • Experienced video journalists, producers, DPs, editors, animators, etc. can apply
  • Please expect Mongabay Video’s input for editorial consistency and visual style before publication of the completed video.
  • The completed video has to adhere to Mongabay’s editorial and ethics guidelines.

How to apply

Please be prepared to share your resume/portfolio along with three samples of your work. The pitch should be no more than 500 words and include a title for the project. Viable pitches will clearly explain the narrative (including potential characters) in detail, and your approach to covering it (including shot list, timeline & budget). Apply here.
