THE ONE WORLD MEDIA AWARDS 2021

Award Across 15 categories, the One World Media Awards 2021 celebrate the best media coverage of the global south; stories that break through stereotypes, change the narrative and connect people across cultures. The Awards look to champion stories that demonstrate originality, creativity, and the potential to catalyse change. All entries should highlight underreported stories or issues, or explore new angles on familiar topics.

UGANDA NATIONAL JOURNALISM AWARDS 2021

Award The Uganda National Journalism Awards 2021 are open to all journalists working in print, television, radio and online news platforms in Uganda for stories published between 1 January and 31 December 2020. The objectives are to increase the quality of public affairs reporting and investigative journalism, promote accurate and knowledgeable investigative reporting, and advance innovation in storytelling.

Grant The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) seeks nominations for the 2021 ICFJ Knight International Journalism Awards. The ICFJ Knight International Journalism Award recognizes excellent reporting that makes a difference in the lives of people around the world. Recipients of the ICFJ Knight International Journalism Award are reporters, editors, technologists, media managers or citizen journalists who, despite difficult circumstances, produce pioneering news reports or innovations that make a significant impact in their countries.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR 2021 SAMIR KASSIR AWARD

Grant The European Union is currently seeking applications for the 2021 Samir Kassir Award. The award aims to “legitimise freedom of thought and encourage freedom of the press in countries that have committed to the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, in order to assert their rejection of violence, intimidation, threats and recurring and consistent attempts to curtain freedom of expression”.

MAJALAT MOBILE JOURNALISM COMPETITION

Award The Majalat project welcomes journalists, activists, and content creators to participate in Mobile Journalism Competition South Med Civil Society on the Ground. The subject of the competition is creation of a video regarding a societal phenomenon in one of the following areas: good governance, economic development, migration, security, climate and social justice, and youth.

THE MICHAEL ELLIOTT AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN AFRICAN STORYTELLING

Award The Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling, a collaboration between the International Center for Journalists, the ONE Campaign, and the Elliott family, honours up-and-coming journalists in Africa who strives to strengthen people’s voices and illuminate the transformational change taking place on the continent.

SUBMIT NOMINATIONS FOR 2021 SIGMA AWARDS

Grant Nominations are now open for the 2021 Sigma Awards to empower, elevate and enlighten the global community of data journalists. The Sigma Awards is a competition to celebrate the best data journalism from around the world. The international data journalism community is facing many challenges, and they want to support them. This year’s Sigma Awards will be about highlighting the very best data journalism done about the pandemic (and building an international database record of such projects), but also those covering other topics such as politics, sports, or the environment.

Award Applications are now open for the 2021 edition of the Amnesty International Media Awards. The International Media Awards celebrate excellence in human rights journalism and applaud the courage and determination of journalists and editors who put their lives on the line to tell important human rights stories across 11 different categories.

THE IJ4EU IMPACT AWARD

Grant With a pot of cash prizes totalling €15,000, the IJ4EU Impact Award celebrates the best investigative journalism carried out by teams collaborating across borders in European Union member states and EU candidate countries. Nominations for the inaugural awards opened on Tuesday, 6 October 2020. An independent jury will select three collaborative, transnational investigations for three prizes, each worth €5,000. The winners will be announced at IJ4EU’s UNCOVERED Conference in early 2021.

MEMBERSHIP IN NEWS FUND

Grant The Membership in News Fund provides financial and venture support to help news organizations build strong and flexible relationships with their audience members that can drive greater sustainability and impact – and help expand the journalism field’s understanding of what works. Membership Puzzle Project first launched the Membership in News Fund in 2018. Ahead of Membership Puzzle Project’s August 2021 sunset, we’re reopening the fund to support membership development projects. 

ILO SEEKING APPLICATIONS FOR GLOBAL MEDIA COMPETITION ON LABOUR MIGRATION & FAIR RECRUITMENT

Grant The competition aims to promote quality reporting on labour migration issues. It will give awards to two published media pieces. For the first time it will also give prizes for two ‘synopses’ of stories to be developed on labour migration or fair recruitment.

APPLY NOW FOR THE LIVINGSTON AWARDS FOR YOUNG JOURNALISTS – UNITED STATES

Grant The Livingston Awards invites print, online, video, audio and data visualization entries. Prizes of $10,000 will be presented in three categories: local, national and international reporting. There is no entry fee. Prize money is paid directly to the journalists, not the media organization.

2020 GABO AWARD

Deadline: 05 October 2020
Grant Fundación Gabo is accepting nominations for the Gabo Prize, the most important recognition of journalism in Spanish and Portuguese, to recognise works presented in all journalistic genres and publication media. Text, video, photography, documentary, radio, podcast, graphic works or animations presented by a person or a team may be nominated.

EU INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM AWARD FOR BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA AND KOSOVO

Deadline: 09 October 2020
Grant Applications are now open for submission of investigative articles from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo for the annual EU Investigative Journalism Award. Investigative stories published from January 1 to December 31, 2019, and related to freedom of expression, rule of law, transparency, abuse of power and fundamental rights, corruption and organised crime are welcome to apply.

“JOURNALISTIC INVESTIGATIONS OF 2020” COMPETITION – MOLDOVA

Grant The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (Germany) and the Independent Press Association (API) of the Republic of Moldova are launching a competition to award well-documented journalistic investigations by journalists or groups of journalists from the Republic of Moldova, for stories published between October 16, 2019 – October 15, 2020.

RAINFOREST JOURNALISM FUND – INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

Grant The Pulitzer Center is inviting proposals for grants to journalists reporting for wide-reaching major news media outlets on tropical rainforests in any part of the world. The supported projects will focus on the tropical forests’ role in the overall climate equation and weather patterns globally, regionally and locally, and the consequences for human life and living conditions caused by deforestation; deforestation drivers; and solutions to halt deforestation.

JOURNALISM 360 CHALLENGE

Grant The Journalism 360 Challenge is an open call for ideas using immersive storytelling to discover new ways to engage audiences and advance the field of journalism.
Winners will receive a share of $100,000 for early-stage projects that help expand best practices for technologies including, but not limited to: 360 video, spatial audio, augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality.
