The spread of COVID-19 has had a major impact on travel and public gatherings internationally. At the time of writing, cases of COVID-19 have been detected in over 100 countries. As a result, several major media development and journalism events have been cancelled or postponed for the foreseeable future.
On February 4th, GFMD attended the event “From Analysis to Action: Unpacking “Shrinking Space ” in the Context of The EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy 2020- 2024″, organised by the EPD, in cooperation with The Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy, and HRDN.
On February 6th, IREX hosted a webinar titled “Towards Inclusive Safety Trainings: A discussion and training showcase with IREX’s Securing Access to Free Expression (SAFE) team”.
On February 6, IREX will host a GFMD webinar to present a new Annex to its Basic Training curriculum, provide a showcase of one of the curriculum’s lessons, and discuss inclusion in safety training.
On December 19, Rana Sabbagh, executive director of Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism will host a GFMD member-only webinar titled “Investigative journalists under autocratic regimes: the work of ARIJ”.
As part of GFMD’s ongoing member-only webinar series, Anna Rohleder of Sourcefabric, presented a webinar titled “Circumventing censorship in the Balkans, Caucasus, and beyond with web-based technology”.
Next week, GFMD will participate in 14th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) from 25-29 November at the Estrel Congress Center in Berlin and hosted by the Government of Germany.
For the second session of GFMD’s members-only webinar series, Pierre François Docquir of ARTICLE 19, presented their ongoing initiative to develop Social Media Councils for the moderation of online platforms.
As part of ongoing efforts to facilitate active communication of the valuable work being conducted within the GFMD network, GFMD is establishing a series of members-only webinars to highlight the work being carried out by members, starting on October 17th, 2019.
From July 10th to 11th 2019, GFMD will attend the Global Conference for Media Freedom in London, co-hosted by the UK and Canadian Govenments. The conference is part of an international campaign to raise awareness of the importance of international press freedom, and also to increase the consequences faced by those who try to restrict it.
GFMD will be represented by Advocacy and Engagement Manager, Michael Oghia at a session titled “Impact of Digital Development on Media Pluralism” at the 21st Regional Central Asia Media Conference, titled “Media Freedom and Pluralism in times of Digital Transformation” will be held this year in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan from July 17th to 18th.
GFMD member Abraji hosted its 14th International Congress of Investigative Journalism in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from June 27th to 29th. Held annually since 2005, the Congress is the largest gathering of journalists in Latin America and this year’s event attracted 1200 attendees.
On May 28-29, GFMD’s Anne Marie Hammer and Justine Marchal attended the EU DisinfoLab’s annual conference. Key experts presented the emotional and psychological mechanisms behind public susceptibility to disinformation, introduced research and findings related to the recent European election campaigns, and discussed viable options for regulation both nationally and internationally.
On June 25th at 16:00 CEST, GFMD will be hosting a members-only capacity-building webinar focusing on the challenges of fundraising for media development. The third instalment in GFMD’s ongoing Capacity-Building Programme, this event will focus on strategies for tapping into available funding streams for media development, including philanthropists and private foundations.
GFMD will be represented at RightsCon 2019 in Tunis by Executive Director, Mira Milosevic, and Advocacy and Engagement Manager, Michael J. Oghia. Additionally, GFMD will be co-organising a session on Wednesday, 12 June at 9:00 AM with Tim Karr from Free Press.
GFMD and the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) are co-organising various workshops related to journalism and news media in the digital age on day 2 of the European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG)

Workshop Three Thematic Focus Areas in the IGF 2019 Programme At its first face-to-face meeting in January, and following extensive discussions on a strategic, thematic direction for IGF activities in 2019, the IGF Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) identified three priority themes on which to build a focused and cohesive programme this year.
