WAN-IFRA Women in News (WIN) aims to increase women’s leadership and voices in the news. It does so by equipping women journalists and editors with the skills, strategies, and support networks to take on greater leadership positions within their media. In parallel, WIN partners with media organisations to identify industry-led solutions to create environments that embrace equality, and navigate the transition to digital to build toward greater financial and operational stability.

Women in News has been running capacity building programmes and in-house training and coaching for 10 years in Sub-Saharan Africa, and 5 years in the Arab region via support from the Swedish International Cooperation Development Agency and Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Most recently we launched in Myanmar and Vietnam as part of WAN-IFRA’s strengthening independent programme, which is supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
WAN-IFRA Women in News is seeking a Project Manager to support the Africa division of the programme, notably working with our advisory partners in the region and any other related activity.
The Project Manager, Women in News Africa, is an essential position within the Women in News team. The Project Manager is expected to work closely and collaboratively with the Women in News leadership group to implement WIN’s shared vision and strategic objectives. They will work openly and collaboratively with their counterparts in the Arab region, South East Asia, as well as other key members of the leadership group. This is a 12-month contract position.
Applicants should ideally be located in one of the markets of Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia or Zimbabwe
Specific deliverables of this role include:
- Develop relationships with and manage day-to-day activities of advisory partners, working closely with Head of Africa and Digital Strategy & Stability Lead to successfully implement an ambitious 2021 Advisory strategy that prioritises the adoption by all Africa Advisory partners of the stability Indicators tool and sustainability support programme in parallel with the overall strategic priorities of improved gender balance and management of sexual harassment practices, outlined in our 2021 Implementation calendar and programme targets. This will include a number of in-house trainings and coaching sessions that will take place virtually and in person in addition to the regular (monthly) closed door roundtable sessions, and opportunities for members of the WIN Advisory to connect directly with the larger WAN-IFRA Community.
- Collaborate closely with the Lead Digital Trainer to develop 2021 WIN Stability Support programme, a central component of the Advisory 2021 Strategy;
- Coordinate, focus and galvanise Country Coordinators and other trainers and experts to deliver the gender balance and managing sexual harassment modules as part of the Advisory and in adherence with the Implementation Plan, and helping to avoid blockages; alerting to possible delays, and identifying opportunities to deliver increased value to and explore new opportunities, with, partners.
- Provide logistical support for WIN advisory activities, particularly in-house trainings on sexual harassment, gender balance in content, digital and stability indicators;
- Develop programme and manage end-to-end Advisory Closed Door Best Practice Share and Digital ABC sessions including liaising with trainers and guest speakers, issuing invitations to advisory partners and engaging in promotion and communication;
- Validate Level Classification of Advisory Partners and ensure follow through of applicable benefits from time to time.
- Excellent project management skills with proven track record in successful completion of projects within set timeframes;
- 5-10 years Project management experience with large-scale, gender, media development or press freedom advocacy programmes throughout sub-Saharan Africa with established networks within the media and gender/diversity CSO space, as well as academia (universities/technical colleges) in above markets referenced;
- Demonstrated teamwork, collaboration, organisational and critical thinking skills
- Ability to make immediate and fast decisions (effective decision-making skills);
- Demonstrated ability to manage conflict and facilitate/moderate in meetings and secure common ground and consensus;
- Solid communication skills (written and speaking) with ability to communicate effectively with influence with colleagues, peers and partners;
- Exceptional time and budget management skills, and ability to lead multiple projects at once;
- Robust interpersonal and relationship management skills with consistent engagement and leveraging networks of partners and other key stakeholders;
- Distinguished leadership skills including self-management skills;
- Ability to demonstrate trustworthiness, dependability and agility to respond to emerging and urgent issues;
- Ability to collaborate effectively with remote team members;
- Results oriented disposition;
- Strong moral and ethical principles and values;
- Confident numeracy, written & IT skills, analytical reasoning;
- Knowledge of coaching in leadership will be an added advantage;
- Direct experience in the media industry in region will be an added advantage;
