CPJ is seeking a Specialist Editor for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to join its global Programs team. The Specialist Editor will lead the creation, editing, and publication of content aligned with CPJ’s mission to defend press freedom and support regional advocacy. This includes daily news alerts, statements, reports, and social media content.

As a regional editorial lead, the Specialist Editor will work closely with the Regional Director and the Research & Analysis team to shape and execute editorial strategy. The role requires strong writing, editing, and collaboration skills, and a solid understanding of press freedom issues in the MENA region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Commission, write, and edit daily content (news alerts, reports, social media posts) relevant to MENA press freedom issues.
  • Publish and manage content on CPJ’s website and social media channels.
  • Ensure content aligns with MENA time zones and audience needs.
  • Edit reports on attacks against journalists and uphold CPJ’s editorial standards.
  • Collaborate with regional researchers to ensure accuracy and impact of published materials.
  • Maintain and update internal systems (Carta) and databases with relevant regional information.
  • Provide mentorship on editorial best practices to regional staff.
  • Occasionally work evening/weekend shifts, including on-call duties every 6–8 weeks.
 Eligibility Criteria
  • Minimum of 3 years editing experience in a newsroom, broadcast outlet, or digital platform.
  • Ability to identify potentially sensitive or libelous content.
  • Familiarity with web publishing platforms (e.g., WordPress).
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to CPJ’s mission.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in international journalism or editing writers whose first language is not English.
    Knowledge of AP style.
  • Fluency in a regional language is highly desirable (e.g., Arabic, French).
