The Pulitzer Center is seeking a Senior Editor to head its Artificial Intelligence Accountability initiative. This is a leadership role with an inspiring mandate: to lead a diverse team of journalists to work collaboratively across borders on game-changing stories about the impact of AI systems in communities around the world.

The AI Senior Editor leads the Pulitzer Center’s AI Accountability Network, an initiative that seeks to address the knowledge imbalance on artificial intelligence that exists in the journalism industry and to create a multidisciplinary and collaborative ecosystem that enables journalists to report on these fast-evolving technologies with skill, nuance, and impact.

The Senior Editor shapes the vision and the strategy of the AI Accountability Network and oversees the management of the fellows/grantees, and their projects.

Responsibilities

AI Accountability Network management (60%)

  • Manage the recruitment process for the AI accountability reporting fellows and grantees.
  • Manage a portfolio of AI-related reporting projects to ensure their effective and timely completion.
  • Design and organise training and mentorship programs for the AI accountability fellows in collaboration with the editorial team and other partners.
  • Connect the journalists we support with partners and resources that can aid their stories and maximize their impact.
  • Negotiate with host news organisations to assure that the fellows have the support and resources they need to pursue their projects and that the stories get maximum visibility.
  • Design and facilitate in-person and virtual team meetings and create a learning environment for the journalists who are part of the initiative, so they can support one another, build community, and share knowledge.
  • Liaise and coordinate fellows’ support with the Pulitzer Center’s Research and Data Unit to ensure fellows benefit from the available resources and in-house expertise.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets, universities and other initiative partners.
  • Track and record impact and ensure that it is communicated to the public, to donors and to other stakeholders.
  • Oversee the implementation of the AI Spotlight Series program by staff and consultants.

Cross-team and administrative work (20%)

  • Track and manage the AI initiative budget in collaboration with the Center’s Finance team.
  • Collaborate with the Pulitzer Center’s Engagement and Education team to maximise communication and coordination on AI accountability activities.
  • Liaise with the editorial admin team on payments, travel logistics, virtual events, surveys, and other activities that support the work of the fellows and grantees.
  • Participate in joint communication efforts about the AI network or other Pulitzer Center initiatives in partnership with the Communications Team.
  • Participate in select events that bring our journalists and their work to our network of schools, universities, and seminars/conferences.
  • Support the Development team as it works to raise money for the AI initiative.
  • Participate in the editorial team meetings and weigh in on discussions about new and ongoing projects.
  • Help expand and diversify the community of Pulitzer journalist-grantees by cultivating contacts with a wide range of reporters and editors.

Participation in efforts and projects that support Pulitzer Center culture and values (10%)

  • This may include task forces, training sessions, meetings, committees, special projects, organisational events, and any other activities that support the Pulitzer Center.
  • Participate in the planning processes for the organisation.
Qualifications
  • Eight to ten years of experience leading enterprise, in-depth reporting projects, including on technology and/or AI issues.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and interest in issues and trends linked to AI accountability such as supply chains, labor, algorithmic harms, bias, surveillance, among others
  • Experience recruiting and leading diverse teams of journalists.
  • The ability to act as an adviser and coach and to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks without compromising quality.
  • The ability to think of strategic and proactive solutions to challenges and opportunities and the drive to innovate.
  • The ability to work independently and to have an open and collaborative management style, characteristic of a team player.
  • A deep understanding of core journalistic values, including accuracy, independence, and fairness.
  • Meeting design and facilitation skills.
  • Fluent in oral and written English. Familiarity with other languages would be helpful and should be noted in the application.
