Report Writer, Project Oasis

Status: Closed

Type:
  • Employment

Organisation: SembraMedia

Deadline: 02/11/2022

Location: Remote

Launched in March 2022, Project Oasis is a research project designed to study the sustainability of digital native media organisations in more than 40 countries across Europe. It is led by SembraMedia, in partnership with EJC, IMS, GFMD, CMDS, and GNI (you can read the press release here).

At the end of this year-long project, the Project Oasis research team will publish a directory in English with individual profiles for each featured media organisation. This directory will be searchable, interactive, and feature hundreds of media organisations.

It will be accompanied by a comprehensive report that highlights regional trends and top findings for the digital news sector across Europe, for which SembraMedia is recruiting a writer.

Tasks and goals:
  • Read at least 250 short profiles of media organisations featured in the directory to better understand differences and similarities between media.
  • Read 40+ individual country summaries, written by researchers, to identify overall trends and challenges.
  • Review data from the directory and identify, together with the project team, which data points to highlight and/or visually illustrate in the final report.
  • Produce a draft of the report, incorporating feedback from the project team.
  • Write and deliver the final report (estimated at 5,000 words/10 pages + country summaries) in a timely manner according to the project timeline.
Responsibilities:
  • Participate in training and coordination meetings with the Project Director and/or Coordinator.
  • Review project materials (profiles of media organisations and individual country summaries) to identify overall trends and challenges across Europe.
  • Review data and trends from the analysis conducted by the project’s data analyst, and decide which to include and contextualise in the report.
  • Review relevant materials (reports, research and case studies, articles) from additional sources to inform the Project Oasis findings, and include these in the report’s bibliography.
  • Develop a proposed structure for the report, including an executive summary and recommendations, and work with the Project Director to refine it.
  • Assist with identifying key data points that should be illustrated in data visualisations.
  • Assist with writing the headlines and short explanations that are part of graphics and data visualisations.
Required experience:
  • Deep knowledge of the overall European media ecosystem, and a strong understanding of independent, digital native media organisations.
  • Strong writing skills. Previous experience in writing similar journalism reports or studies is preferred.
  • Ability to interpret and explain key data.
  • Detail-oriented work ethic with a track record for completing projects on time.
  • Native English speakers preferred. Must have experience writing in British English.
