Senior Editor, Oceans Investigations

The Pulitzer Center is seeking an Investigations Editor to head its new Oceans Investigations initiative. This is a leadership role with a big mandate: to inspire a diverse team of journalists to work collaboratively across borders on game-changing stories about the environmental and criminal pressures affecting the health of the planet’s oceans and the livelihoods of the more than 3 billion people who depend on them.

The editor of the Oceans initiative will recruit and coordinate a network of journalists and news organizations to investigate stories related to the depletion of fisheries, climate change, labor abuses at sea, illicit money flows, marine biodiversity, and ocean pollution, among others.

The Oceans Investigations Editor will work directly with the Environment Investigations Editor to support the fellows and grantees. The Pulitzer Center is seeking an enterprising and team-oriented professional who will learn from and contribute ideas to the journalists’ projects in different parts of the world and will work efficiently and collegially with diverse media outlets.

The Pulitzer Center is looking for an editor with a proven track record in environmental investigations, superb collaboration skills, and experience managing complex reporting projects.

The Pulitzer Center editorial team empowers a global community of journalists and media outlets to deepen engagement with critical underreported issues, bridge divides, and spur change. Its team evaluates hundreds of journalistic project proposals every year to identify the most compelling ones to support and fosters collaborative networks that bring together journalists working on underreported systemic stories.

Responsibilities:

• Shaping strategy of the Oceans Investigations Network and recruiting a core coordinating team
• Recruiting and reviewing applications to identify the most promising story proposals and the most compelling and collaborative journalists for the network
• Inspiring and managing the network of investigative journalists and newsrooms
• Working with journalist grantees and host newsrooms to assure timely and successful completion of projects
• Identifying and/or developing, alongside the technology/data specialist, the most useful datasets, networking platforms and digital tools to support the work of the investigative journalists and host newsrooms
• Participating in select events that bring journalists and their work to the Center’s network of schools, community colleges, universities, and two annual conferences
• Leading the organization of virtual and in-person meetings and events
• Editing and reviewing articles, press releases, and blog posts Performing administrative tasks as needed
• Ensuring communication and collaboration with the other Pulitzer Center’s environmental initiatives

Qualifications:

• Five to ten years of experience leading environmental journalistic investigations. Experience working on oceans stories is a plus.
• The ability to act as an adviser and coach and to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks without compromising quality.
• Demonstrated understanding of and interest in issues and trends linked to the health of oceans, such as climate change, illegal fishing, biodiversity, and governance.
• The ability to think of strategic and proactive solutions to challenges and opportunities and the drive to innovate.
• The ability to work independently and to have an open and collaborative management style, characteristic of a team player.
• A deep understanding of core journalistic values, including accuracy, independence, and fairness.
• Fluent in oral and written English. Familiarity with other languages would be helpful and should be noted in the application.
