The Programme Lead will oversee FPU’s Safety of Journalists team in Amsterdam, guiding strategy, partnerships, and emergency response initiatives to create a safer environment for journalists worldwide. The Programme Lead will manage a team of staff and consultants, represent FPU in international coalitions, and drive innovation in protection strategies for journalists working under threat.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and supervise the Safety of Journalists team (5 staff and 2 consultants), ensuring a safe and supportive work environment.
- Oversee programme strategy, project implementation, and budgets in collaboration with the grant & compliance team.
- Represent FPU in international coalitions and networks such as ACOS, GFMD, and the Journalists in Distress Network.
- Coordinate with other FPU departments to share expertise and improve practices.
- Continuously strengthen safety strategies and foster international collaborations for emergency support.
- Build and maintain networks with organisations and stakeholders working on journalist safety worldwide.
- Represent FPU publicly through media outreach and external engagement on journalist protection.
- Lead proposal development and fundraising to support and expand the programme.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Journalism, Conflict Studies, International Law, International Development Studies).
- Minimum 5 years’ experience managing teams in international contexts, preferably in fragile or repressive environments.
- Strong people management skills, with cultural sensitivity and a collaborative spirit.
- Proven ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects, and drive results.
- Experience in fundraising and programme acquisition.
- Excellent written and spoken English; additional languages (Spanish, French, or Arabic) are an asset.
- Strong empathy, integrity, and accountability, with a deep commitment to press freedom and journalist safety.
