MDIF is looking for a Program Director for Southeast Asia to lead its strategy and programming in the region. This senior-level position is responsible for strengthening independent media ecosystems by building investment pipelines, supporting client growth, leading program design and delivery, and managing strategic relationships. The ideal candidate is an experienced media professional with strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills.

 Key Responsibilities
  • Shape and implement MDIF’s Southeast Asia strategy tailored to regional dynamics.
  • Collaborate with the Investment Committee and regional investment team to evaluate mission alignment and business viability.
  • Develop and manage a strong investment pipeline for loan and equity opportunities.
  • Guide and monitor the mission-related elements of client activities.
  • Coordinate non-financial investment elements and provide strategic guidance to media partners.
  • Lead technical assistance coordination in collaboration with MDIF’s Media Advisory Services (MAS).
  • Manage fundraising efforts and relationships with donors and media investors in the region.
  • Design, oversee, and scale regional media support programs and initiatives.
  • Prepare country and candidate assessments and materials for internal review.
  • Represent MDIF in Board roles, regional partnerships, and media development events.
  • Build networks with regional stakeholders and enhance MDIF’s visibility and impact.
 Eligibility Criterias
  • Degree in media, journalism, management, business, or related fields.
  • Graduate qualifications are an asset.
  • Proven experience managing a news/media organization or working in journalism.
  • Additional experience in finance, civil society, product management, media support, or impact investment is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of Southeast Asia’s political, social, and media landscape.
  • Experience working across multiple Southeast Asian countries.
  • Existing relationships within the media sector and among regional stakeholders are preferred.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; proficiency in Southeast Asian languages is advantageous.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Self-directed, with the ability to work independently and within international teams.
  • Sound judgment, flexibility, and a collaborative mindset.
  • Ability to travel frequently within the region and occasionally outside it.
  • Deep commitment to press freedom and democratic values.
