Global Network Initiative (GNI) is seeking a Policy & Communications Associate/Manager to lead global policy work advancing digital freedom of expression and privacy. This key role will help drive policy development, increase the visibility of GNI’s work, and support membership engagement, working with a global, multistakeholder membership of technology companies, civil society organizations, investors, and academics.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and expand GNI’s human rights-based framework, guiding companies in responses to government pressures on user content and data access.
  • Oversee an independent accountability mechanism focused on GNI Principles and Implementation Guidelines, including internal and public reporting.
  • Support GNI’s global membership, Board, and committees in policy development, accountability, due diligence, and other related areas.
  • Develop and facilitate learning opportunities, fostering transparency, knowledge-building, and collaboration to respond to emerging online privacy and free expression issues.
  • Engage with government actors, international institutions, media, and technologists to leverage GNI’s voice in global debates on privacy, free expression, and company responsibilities.
  • The Policy & Communications Associate/Manager will report to the Executive Director and work closely with GNI’s staff, Board, committees, and members.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Policy, International Relations, Human Rights, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred but not required.
  •  Between 5 and 12 years of experience working in tech policy, human rights, or responsible business conduct.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing policy and communications strategies.
  • Strong experience working with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to conduct in-depth research, analyze complex policy issues, and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  •  Exceptional writing skills with experience in drafting reports, statements, memos, and other policy-related documents. Strong editing and content review capabilities.
  • Experience in media outreach and media monitoring.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively, managing cross-functional teams and committees to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Ability to work in a diverse, multi-stakeholder environment, with a strong commitment to fostering inclusivity and transparency.
  • Fluency in English (both written and spoken) is required; additional language skills (especially in Spanish or French) are a plus.
