OCJN Network Controller

Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ) is seeking a candidate for the position of Network Controller. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, well-connected individual with a background in environmental or climate change journalism. As Network Controller, the person will develop the Oxford Climate Journalism Network (OCJN), a programme designed to bring journalists in contact with scientists and other leading thinkers in the field of environmental science. Network Controller will help journalists deal with issues of misinformation, ethics, audience behaviours, social justice and diversity. To achieve this, the person will set up multi-disciplinary online courses, designing an engaging, relevant and international curriculum. Drawing on the expertise of academics and members of the project advisory board, the courses will cover a wide range of topics including climate literacy, ethics, audience engagement, attribution and misinformation. A Network Controller will also work with the Reuters Institute senior management team to coordinate activities in other areas including its research and leadership programmes.

The position is fixed-term until 31 December 2022 and is offered on a full-time basis, starting in January 2022. Funding is provided by the European Climate Foundation.

Duties and requirements:

  • The person will be educated to degree level and have substantial professional experience at a senior level of climate change journalism in an international context, combined with an understanding of and experience in digital journalism.
  • Network Controller will also have experience in convening and running online events for a global audience.
  • It is essential that a candidate has a high level of knowledge and understanding of the UK and international media, as well as having an existing network of global journalists and editors.
