The Monitoring Journalists will play a key role in Contexte’s European newsroom, scanning for breaking news and overnight developments relevant to its English-language verticals, Politics and Energy.
Working closely with the morning proofreaders and editors, the Monitoring Journalists will help ensure that subscribers receive accurate, timely, and insightful briefings by 8:00 a.m. CET.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced journalist with a strong grasp of EU affairs to contribute to a high-calibre newsroom while maintaining flexibility through freelance work.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and identify breaking news and developments from official sources and reputable media published overnight or early morning.
- Write concise and accurate news briefs for inclusion in Contexte’s EU briefings in English.
- Coordinate with proofreaders and copyeditors to clarify and verify information prior to publication.
- Contribute to maintaining Contexte’s reputation for clarity, precision, and relevance in EU policy reporting.
Preferred Experience & Skills
- You have a strong interest in and knowledge of EU politics and policy.
- You are a journalist with at least 5 years of professional experience, looking to supplement your work as a freelance or part-time contributor.
- You have native-level English writing and editing skills, with experience in Anglo-style journalism.
- You possess excellent news judgement and can quickly identify the most relevant developments for policy-focused readers.
- You are highly detail-oriented, able to write clearly and concisely under time pressure.
- You are well-organised, able to manage multiple topics during tight morning deadlines.
- You enjoy early-morning work — or are based in a different time zone where the 6 a.m. CET shift suits your schedule.
- Knowledge of French or other European languages is an advantage (though not required).
