Media Diversity Institute Communications Manager

Job Description 

As MDI’s Communications Manager, you will have the opportunity to curate and edit a one-ofits-kind space on all things at the intersection of media and diversity issues. You will manage a small team of both in-house and freelance contributors and have a chance to play a role in leading the debate on the media’s role in advocating for diversity and advancing social issues, ranging from promoting representation and inclusion in the media sector to combatting hate speech and disinformation. 

The ideal candidate is passionate about diversity and inclusion and has at least 3-5 years of journalism or communications experience, and experience as an editor is a huge plus. They have a strong instinct for what makes a good story, and a proven track record of leading small teams, publishing quality content and growing an audience on social media. They are familiar with WordPress as a CMS, and comfortable posting on social media on behalf of a brand or organization. While multimedia skills are not a must, they are certainly an asset, as is experience creating and implementing a communications strategy and a clear vision for how to expand MDI’s communication strategy going forwards. Native English or equivalent capabilities in writing and editing is an absolute must and working proficiency in other languages is a huge advantage.  

Our offices are based in London, but we are still working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the Communications Manager is currently a part-time position, there is a strong possibility to make it full-time in the future. Salary: £150 – £175/day depending on experience.

The Communications Manager is responsible for all MDI content published on the website and social media platforms. It is a part time job, with a possibility of becoming a full-time job for the right candidate.  

  • Commission/Edit 2-3 articles per week 
  • Write short articles/blog posts in response to MDI events and activities 
  • Write one monthly newsletter 
  • Maintain social media platforms according to MDI’s communication’s strategy 
  • Manage communications interns 

Requirements: 

  • Native English speaker or equivalent capabilities in writing & editing 
  • 3-5 years journalism/communications experience
