Investigate Europe (IE) is a cross-border network of investigative journalists working collaboratively across 12 European countries. Since 2016, IE has produced award-nominated investigations with leading media partners including The Guardian, Die Zeit, Arte, and Público. Structured as a cooperative, IE operates with a flat, non-hierarchical decision-making model and is committed to editorial independence, multilingual reporting, and public interest journalism.
Investigate Europe is seeking a Managing Director to co-lead the organisation alongside the Editorial Director. This is a strategic and operational leadership role responsible for fundraising, financial management, organisational sustainability, and day-to-day operations. The Managing Director also represents IE externally, building strategic partnerships and donor relationships across Europe.
Responsibilities
- Lead and implement the organisation’s fundraising strategy, identifying and cultivating relationships with institutional donors, philanthropists, and new funding streams (e.g., individual giving).
- Ensure sound financial management, including monitoring annual budgets, legal compliance, and responsible use of resources.
- Provide strategic leadership and vision for the organisation’s growth and sustainability.
- Oversee systems and processes for information and organisational management.
- Support daily operations to ensure coherence and efficiency.
- Represent IE externally alongside the Editorial Director, building strategic partnerships and alliances.
- Develop and maintain tools to support small-donor and membership models.
- Collaborate with the Editorial Director to ensure a strong and effective co-directorship.
- Embrace the cooperative model, working with democratic and shared leadership practices.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience in fundraising, ideally within the journalism, media, or nonprofit sectors.
- Strong record of building and sustaining long-term relationships with funders and partners.
- Demonstrated expertise in financial oversight, including budget planning and resource allocation.
- Familiarity with newsroom dynamics, journalism workflows, or media strategy is highly desirable.
- Deep commitment to cooperative values and democratic governance models.
- Strong understanding of European political institutions and the EU policy environment.
- Skilled in working with multicultural, multilingual teams across borders.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Fluency in English required; knowledge of German or other European languages is a strong asset.
