Investigate Europe (IE) is a cross-border network of investigative journalists working collaboratively across 12 European countries. Since 2016, IE has produced award-nominated investigations with leading media partners including The Guardian, Die Zeit, Arte, and Público. Structured as a cooperative, IE functions with a flat, non-hierarchical decision-making model and is committed to editorial independence, multilingual reporting, and public interest journalism.Investigate Europe is seeking a Managing Director to co-lead the organisation alongside the Editorial Director. This is a strategic and operational leadership role responsible for the organisation’s sustainability, fundraising, financial oversight, and day-to-day management. The Managing Director will also represent IE externally, liaising with funders, partners, and networks across Europe.
Responsibilities
- Cultivate and manage relationships with institutional donors, philanthropists, and new funding avenues (e.g., individual giving).
- Develop and maintain tools to support small-donor and membership models.
- Ensure strong financial management and legal compliance.
- Monitor and plan the annual budget in collaboration with operations staff.
- Provide vision for IE’s growth and sustainability.
- Oversee systems for organisational and information management.
- Support daily operations to ensure efficiency and coherence.
- Represent IE externally alongside the Editorial Director.
- Build and maintain partnerships and alliances that support IE’s mission.
- Work closely with the Editorial Director in a co-directorship model.
- Embrace the cooperative structure and shared leadership practices.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience in fundraising, especially in journalism, media, or nonprofit sectors.
- Strong record of building long-term donor and partner relationships.
- Demonstrated expertise in financial planning, budget oversight, and responsible resource use.
- Familiarity with journalism workflows, newsroom operations, or media strategy.
- Deep commitment to co-operative values and democratic governance models.
- Solid understanding of European political contexts, including EU institutions and policies.
- Skilled in working across multilingual and multicultural teams.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Fluency in English required; German or other European languages are a plus
