Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should meet the following qualifications:
- A high-profile presence in African journalism, with strong reputation and credibility in the field.
- Proven experience conducting exclusive, agenda-setting interviews with high-profile figures in African politics, economics, entertainment, and sports.
- Strong on-air presence with charisma, authority, and the ability to connect with diverse audiences.
- Significant experience in broadcast journalism, particularly in radio or podcasting; TV presentation experience is an added advantage.
- Excellent spoken English – clear articulation, ability to convey complex ideas simply and compellingly.
- Strong creative writing skills in English, adaptable across media formats and audience types.
- Ability to perform in-depth research and analysis, translating complex issues into relatable narratives.
- Deep understanding of African socio-political landscapes and how to communicate those nuances globally.
- Proven experience in navigating editorial policy and legal frameworks.
- Competency in digital video output and audience engagement on social media platforms.
- Cultural sensitivity and an understanding of diverse perspectives and communities.
- Willingness to relocate to Nairobi, with relocation support provided if applicable.
Key Responsibilities
As Lead Presenter, your role will include:
- Presenting Focus on Africa radio and podcast programs, and occasionally TV, with authority and engaging storytelling.
- Conducting thorough pre-broadcast research on current events, issues, and guests to ensure informed discussion.
- Hosting exclusive interviews with key African figures – political, economic, and cultural – to foster meaningful dialogue.
- Engaging with listeners through live interactions, social media lives, and participatory segments.
- Working closely with the editorial team to curate stories that resonate with audiences and align with the program’s objectives.
- Providing insightful analysis and contextual storytelling that simplifies complex topics.
- Representing the BBC and Focus on Africa at events, media appearances, and public forums.
- Contributing to the development and promotion of podcast content, staying ahead of trends.
- Building a strong online presence, promoting episodes and interacting with followers.
- Mentoring junior team members, encouraging creativity, collaboration, and innovation.
- Exploring new formats and technologies to enhance audience engagement.
- Liaising with other departments within the BBC to ensure synergy, efficiency, and editorial excellence.
- Building and maintaining diverse contact networks, sharing intelligence across the team.
