Location: Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

BBC Media Action is seeking an experienced Lead Journalism Mentor to support journalists in Fiji and Papua New Guinea. The successful candidate will provide high-level editorial guidance and capacity strengthening to local journalists and journalism mentors, with a focus on producing impactful public interest media content that meets international standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mentor up to twelve South Pacific journalists in Fiji and Papua New Guinea to enhance journalistic skills and strengthen content quality.
  • Provide expert editorial support grounded in international journalistic and ethical standards.
  • Guide local journalism mentors to improve their coaching and editorial oversight capacities.
  • Support journalists in producing public interest media informed by BBC Media Action’s audience research data.
  • Strengthen audience engagement strategies to maximise reach across both countries.
  • Deliver mentorship primarily on-site in Fiji and PNG, with limited remote mentoring as needed during local working hours.
  • Collaborate closely with the Project Director and project teams to ensure alignment with programme goals.
Skills & Experience
  • Extensive experience in journalism, reporting, or editorial leadership.
  • Strong track record of mentoring, coaching, or training journalists.
  • Deep understanding of international editorial standards and ethical journalism principles.
  • Experience producing or guiding public interest media content.
  • Strong ability to work cross-culturally and adapt guidance to local contexts in the Pacific region.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel extensively within Fiji and Papua New Guinea throughout the contract period.
  • Fluency in English; strong writing and reporting skills.
