The JournalismAI Academy, led by the JournalismAI team at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and powered by the Google News Initiative, is now accepting applications for its 2025 Sub-Saharan Africa cohort.
This FREE 5-week online training programme supports journalists and media professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa in exploring how artificial intelligence can enhance their journalism. The Academy offers a deep dive into AI tools, ethics, data, and newsroom innovation.
The JournalismAI Academy has trained over 180 newsroom professionals globally since 2021. This year’s Sub-Saharan Africa cohort will select 20 participants working across Central, East, Southern, and West Africa.
Responsibilities
- Attend all live sessions and workshops (Tuesdays and Thursdays – 90 minutes each)
- Dedicate approx. 4 hours per week to course activities
- Collaborate with peers to build a regional network of media innovators
- Actively engage in discussions and practical assignments
- Develop ideas and resources to support your organisation’s AI journey
- Sign a personal commitment form and submit a management endorsement letter
Eligibility Criteria
- Journalists or media professionals based in Sub-Saharan Africa (GMT+1 to GMT+3)
- Employed by a newsroom (freelancers are not eligible)
- Fluency in English (programme language)
- Basic understanding of AI/ML concepts and interest in AI adoption
- Ability to influence newsroom strategy is a plus
- No coding or technical background required – only a stable internet connection
