The International Press Institute (IPI) is hiring a part-time coordinator for its work to support independent media in Central and Eastern Europe, including Ukraine. The coordinator will, among other things, be responsible for administering IPI’s Ukraine Solidarity and Rapid Response Fund, and other forms of support to Ukrainian media. This fund, backed by IPI members as well as donor organizations, seeks to provide a range of support, including safety and office equipment, costs to support urgent reporting initiatives, emergency relocation, or basic operational costs to independent media in Ukraine. The coordinator will also be responsible for administering IPI’s support programmes to media in Central Europe, including reporting grants.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Assist the IPI staff in assessing needs of independent media in Ukraine in coordination with IPI members and partner organizations in the country.
- Coordinate requests for funding to IPI’s Ukraine Solidarity and Rapid Response Fund from media in Ukraine, assist in the evaluation of requests, and ensure a smooth process for approving and distributing funding.
- Ensure proper documentation, follow up, and reporting on IPI’s support to media in Ukraine for donor reporting and other purposes.
- Manage communication with applicants and recipients of IPI funding in Ukraine and Central Europe.
- Coordinate IPI’s support to media in Central Europe, including grants to support coverage of the war in Ukraine.
- Coordinate meetings and activities of IPI’s Central European Independent Media Network.
- Manage the participation and travel of journalists from Central and Eastern Europe at IPI events, including the IPI World Congress.
- Coordinate the participation of journalists from Ukraine and Central Europe in IPI membership programmes, including in-person exchanges.
- Support IPI in developing strategies to support media in Ukraine and Central and Eastern Europe.
- Assist IPI with other administrative and coordination tasks as relevant.
Skills and experience:
- Strong organizational skills including the ability to prioritize in a busy and challenging environment.
- At least three years of relevant professional experience. Previous work in supporting journalists, media, or human rights defenders would be a clear advantage. Knowledge of the needs of media in Ukraine and Central Europe would be highly beneficial.
- Interest in defending human rights and freedom of expression.
- The discipline to focus on maintaining a work plan while also having the flexibility to respond to urgent situations in real time.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Strong communications abilities.
- Fluency in at least one Central and Eastern European language. Knowledge of Ukrainian is not required but would be an advantage.
- Good collaborative working skills, and ability to generate working relationships with sources and partners
Location and term:
IPI’s headquarters are located in Vienna, Austria. Remote working arrangements may be able to be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

IPI currently has funding to support this position for an initial six months, with the intention to extend if funding remains available. This position is conceived as a part-time position, with details to be discussed with applicants.
Remuneration:
IPI offers a competitive salary based on experience and qualifications. IPI employees based in Austria are exempt from Austrian income tax.
