Mongabay, an award-winning environmental science and conservation news organisation, is seeking an Investigations Editor to lead and coordinate its investigative journalism activities. The role involves developing new areas of inquiry, facilitating cross-border collaborations, and strengthening research and fact-checking processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Organise and manage investigative reporting activities across Mongabay’s editorial teams.
- Identify and develop investigative story ideas relevant to environmental issues.
- Edit and publish investigative work from staff and freelance contributors.
- Commission original research and manage assignments, including field travel.
- Conduct risk assessments, fact-check articles, and coordinate legal reviews.
- Obtain, analyse, and organise documents, datasets, and background research.
- Produce or source multimedia content (charts, maps, photos, videos).
- Manage secure communications and editorial partnerships with media outlets.
- Track story impacts for grant reporting and strategic planning.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as an investigative journalist; portfolio including environmental reporting preferred.
- Exceptional written and spoken English; multilingual candidates preferred.
- Knowledge of conservation and environmental issues, especially agribusiness and extractive industries.
- Experience with cross-border investigative journalism collaborations.
- Proven ability to analyse and interpret data/documents for public audiences.
- Comfortable with multimedia content production.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, WordPress (or similar CMS), Google Drive, social media, and project management tools like Asana.
- Reliable high-speed internet access.
