Director of Global Development, Technical Diversification

The Director, Global Development, Technical Diversification, working under the supervision of the Vice President for Global Development, and working closely with the Chief Programs Officer, the Senior Vice President – Technical Leadership Unit, and Program Management Directors (regional, technical and global) will identify and pursue new development opportunities among US (USAID, DOS/DRL, DOS/NEA, etc.), and foreign public sector donors, with a particular focus on media and information under health, humanitarian and environmental sectors, as well as other areas of interest/growth including gender, inclusion, and youth and their intersection with the media and information landscape in developing countries. The position is responsible for ensuring the organization raises upwards of $15 million in technically diverse sector funding, through representation with partners and donors working in these sectors, overseeing the development of concept notes and proposals, as well as carrying out field assessments and program design work as needed. The position is also responsible for strategizing for the refunding of existing programming in these sectors. This position will track and review NOFOs, requests for applications/proposals (RFPs/RFAs), and determine strategy for application and design and write proposals, both from DC and together with Internews’ regional and/or country program offices .

The Director will supervise one staff member (a Business Development Officer) and may be responsible for additional supervisory responsibilities depending upon growth of the organization and/or the Global Development team. They will be responsible for maintaining strong relationships and partnerships with potential prime partners in this space, as well as working with others to maintain strong relationships with key donors when appropriate.

Day-to-day tasks:
  • Work with the VP of Global Development to design an annual strategy and workplan for achieving the technical diversification annual targets for the organization.
  • Develop new business opportunities donors and partners. This may include development of communication materials (working with the communications team at Internews), ideas for consideration (IFCs), concept notes, proposals, and representation of Internews, as required.
  • Build partnerships with agencies, implementers, and funders in the US and elsewhere, establishing Internews as a project implementer.
  • Carry out field assessments in anticipation of upcoming business development opportunities as requested/required.
  • Review and analyze NOFOs/Requests for Applications/Proposals and help determine potential strategy for application in consultation with Internews program staff.
  • Commission field studies and assessments to assist in the design of new programming.
  • Develop programming in collaboration with field missions and program/technical teams to secure funding from LWAs, IQCs, and IDIQs and other mechanisms that Internews is a part of in the health, humanitarian and environment space.  Maintain relationships with these prime organizations and represent Internews at key meetings/stakeholder consultations.
  • Provide writing guides, calendars, outlines for proposals and concept notes as required for large strategic proposals.
  • Supervise any team members assigned to work on proposals in their area and review proposals in his/her area of expertise.
  • Lead proposal design using Internews tools to support strong program design, including logical frameworks, worksheets, and other tools as appropriate.
  • Lead proposal design teams in selecting winning themes, identifying best practices and making key partnering decisions.
  • Write and edit proposals following donor guidelines and in line with Internews’ internal processes and standards.
  • Position Internews as a possible sub-grantee in proposal applications; member of relevant consortia.
  • Review and analyze Requests for Application/Proposals and help determine potential strategy for application in consultation with Internews program staff. Leading and supervising proposal drafting teams, including review of proposals and concept notes at various stages of development.
  • Assign staff members as appropriate and based upon their skill set and availability to serve as lead writers and/or proposal managers for health, humanitarian and/or environment sector bids in the US.
  • Serve as lead writer and/or proposal manager for larger and more strategic proposals working with relevant Business Managers, Regional Directors, or Country Directors on strategy and budgeting.
  • Build relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization.
  • Using Salesforce and other tools, monitor and evaluate development activities in the DRG sector to ensure that goals/objectives are being achieved.
  • In coordination with Internews’ Grants and Contracts office, work with other members of the Global Development team to submit proposals following funders’ procedures.

  • Work with IEU business development teams to lead and/or support European donor bids in technical diversification as requested and/or needed.

Qualifications:
  • At least 5+ years of solid business development experience in the non-profit sector; work in media/information a strong asset
  • 7 plus years working in international development, media and/or information preferred. (Graduate degree, plus five years of work experience may substitute)
  • At least 2 years of experience working abroad strongly preferred;
  • Relevant university degree or equivalent lived/professional experience. Advanced degree in International Development and/or Human Rights, Democracy/Politics a plus.
  • Strong proposal writing experience, including in response to USAID and other donor solicitations. Prior proposal work with European donors is preferred, but not required.
  • Proven track record of successful and winning business development efforts, worth upwards of affiliated $10 million
  • Excellent critical thinking, writing, and communications skills. (A premium is placed on strong writing and editing skills in this position, and thus a writing test will be required of all candidates).
  • Ability to work with different teams and in different cultures successfully
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to maintain working relationships during stressful proposal processes. Strong sense of humor and a fun spirit a bonus.
  • Ability to manage multiple, ongoing obligations and assignments
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time, often in difficult conditions, however, travel is not guaranteed
  • Native level written fluency in English required; French, Spanish and/or Portuguese language skills a bonus but not required
  • Skilled in MS Office and Excel
