The German Marshall Fund seeks a Grants Accountant who will be responsible for reviewing and managing a portfolio of major grants funded by the EU (European Union) and other European based donors.
The Grants Accountant reviews and tracks financial reporting requirements for EU and European donor-funded grants, ensures compliance with contractual obligations, and prepares interim and final analyses and reports in donor required formats.
The Grants Accountant ensures the setup, monitoring, and closure of grants in the GMF financial administration systems. This position requires strong knowledge and experience with EU and other European donor requirements for grant management, compliance, and reporting.
Responsibilities
- Provide support in managing GMF’s portfolio of major EU and other European donor funded grants and cooperative agreements and facilitate their sound financial administration and reporting.
- Advise the GMF Development team, the FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis) team as well as programmatic staff during the development of grant proposals on technical funder regulations.
- Support the correct setup of all major European grants in GMF’s financial system.
- Create and maintain a calendar of milestones and deliverables for European grants and provide instructions to workstreams for them to meet these requirements promptly.
- Conduct due diligence and review key grant agreements and related documents and prepare them for processing and signature.
- Review and set up suitable invoicing protocol to meet requirements for European funded grants.
- Prepare and finalise interim and final financial reports for major European grants.
- Provide timely information to Support the proper closure of major European grants in the GMF systems.
- Support audits of major European grants as requested.
- Ensure storage of relevant grants records, during and after funding periods, as per funder specifications.
- Contribute to the overall improvement of systems and practices of grant management at GMF.
Required skills
- Minimum of 5 years of technical grant management experience with EU or other European donors, foundations, private and endowment funding.
- Working knowledge of EU and other European donor regulations regarding grants management and compliance.
- Strong experience in managing multi-year and multi-million dollar/euro grants; prior experience as coordinator of an EU-funded project is a plus.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and solid experience with accounting and CRM (Constituent Relationship Management) software (i.e., Oracle NetSuite etc.)
- Demonstrated experience in problem solving and ability to find creative solutions.
- Solid analytical capabilities, excellent data presentation skills, and strong writing skills.
- Sound business judgment and ability to manage shifting priorities and competing deadlines to ensure accuracy and high-quality standards.
- Prior experience in financial management of grants is a plus.
- Prior experience in an international, cross-cultural work environment is a plus.
- Proficiency in English required, proficiency in other languages a plus.
