The Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA), in partnership with Co-Develop, invites journalists from Eastern Africa to apply for the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Journalism Fellowship. This six-month regional fellowship aims to equip journalists with the skills and support needed to report on Digital Public Infrastructure and Digital Public Goods (DPGs)—critical themes shaping digital governance across the continent.
Through a mix of virtual and in-person training, mentorship from senior journalists and digital policy experts, and financial support, fellows will develop impactful stories that raise public awareness and spark meaningful dialogue around DPI.
Objectives
- Build the capacity of journalists in Eastern Africa to report effectively on DPI and DPGs.
- Promote critical engagement and public understanding of foundational digital systems like digital IDs, payment platforms, and open data.
- Amplify lived experiences, opportunities, and risks associated with DPI implementation across the region.
- Support the production of investigative and solutions-driven journalism that informs policy and protects digital rights.
- Create a network of informed media professionals committed to digital inclusion and accountability.
Eligibility
- Open to journalists based in: Burundi, DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda
- Minimum of three years of professional journalism experience
- Proven interest in digital technologies, governance, development, or human rights
- Proficiency in English or French
- Affiliation with a credible media outlet
- Availability to fully participate in the fellowship and related activities
- Women and early-career journalists are strongly encouraged to apply.
