The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism is seeking a Director of Journalist Programmes to lead the delivery, strategic development, and long-term financial sustainability of its flagship journalist-focused initiatives. The role oversees the internationally renowned Reuters Journalist Fellowship Programme, short courses, the Oxford Climate Journalism Network, and other journalist-centred projects, working with hundreds of midcareer journalists from diverse backgrounds worldwide.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the strategic direction and high-quality delivery of all journalist programmes.
  • Ensure long-term financial sustainability through sponsorship, fundraising, and earned income.
  • Oversee admissions, ensuring diversity and global representation.
  • Provide professional and intellectual supervision for fellows and participants.
  • Develop new research avenues and secure research funding.
  • Represent RISJ nationally and internationally at events, conferences, and through media engagement.
  • Manage the Journalist Programmes team, including line management of senior staff.
  • Build collaborations across the University of Oxford, academic networks, and the media industry.
  • Maintain strong relationships with sponsors, funders, and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • Substantial international reputation and recognised authority in newsroom leadership, especially in digital contexts.
  • Proven ability to secure philanthropic support and generate income while safeguarding editorial independence.
  • Demonstrated success in representing work internationally through public speaking and professional engagement.
  • Experience engaging with policymakers and connecting research to professional practice.
  • Authority to engage senior newsroom leaders, funders, and academic stakeholders.
  • Significant experience leading diverse teams, including journalists.
  • Strong communication skills with global media professionals.
  • Commitment to mentoring and professional development of colleagues.
