CPJ is looking for a Senior Editor who will report to the Deputy Editorial Director and will work with CPJ’s directors, regional program coordinators, writers, and researchers worldwide on the coverage of press freedom and journalists safety issues.

Position Overview:

This position is time zone-dependent and applications will be considered from candidates in the Europe/Middle East/Africa/U.K. time zones. The Senior Editor must be fluent in English and will be responsible for editing and publishing content on CPJ’s website, with particular emphasis on managing and prioritizing copy in the hours before the team’s U.S.-based editors begin their day.

CPJ’s editorial team is responsible for content on the organization’s website cpj.org, commissioning, and editing features and special reports, maintaining CPJ’s standards and practices, and editing signature projects such as CPJ’s annual prison census and database on journalists killed in connection with their work. Editors also collaborate closely with the advocacy and communications team.

The successful candidate will be an experienced editor skilled at juggling multiple deadlines and with a deep understanding of global politics and the importance of press freedom. They will also have the confidence, initiative, and sound judgment to work independently.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Edit English-language news alerts, statements, letters, safety advisories, and other daily content for CPJ’s website
  • Edit research on journalists killed and imprisoned for their work
  • Edit newsletters, features, special reports, or other content as assigned
  • Edit for content and structure as well as grammar and Associated Press style
  • Produce and publish content on CPJ’s website, including the home page; choose photos and write captions
  • Collaborate with CPJ’s writers, researchers, and directors on content and format
  • Help ensure content is updated in a timely manner, including the homepage and database of killed, missing, and imprisoned journalists
  • Adhere to tight deadlines, juggling several pieces of copy at once
  • Work with writers of varied experience and English-language skills
  • Occasional weekend or evening work
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Education/Qualifications and Work Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • At least five years as an editor for an English-language news agency, website, newspaper, or broadcast outlet
  • The ability to recognize sensitive or potentially libelous issues and raise them for  discussion
  • Experience in web publishing, including using content management systems such as  WordPress
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and to work independently
  • Commitment to CPJ’s mission

Preferred: 

  • Background in international news
  • Experience working with writers whose first language is not English
  • Familiarity with Associated Press style
